Economists and professors of economics must have presented data on gambling to the public as the most reliable sign of coming recession before Sept. 2008.
Indeed, the clear downturn trend of the gambling practices in Las Vegas, USA, prior to Sept. 2008 indicated something horrible soon coming to the U.S. economy.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority reports that the average foreign visitor spent $1,200 for purposes other than gambling in 2007, up from $1,159 in 2006. That compares with average spending of $701 for all visitors in 2007, down from $750 the year before.

When money, funds, and investments stopped to flow to the American market, not only Las Vegas but also Wall Street would stop to function, which must have been envisaged in early 2008.

In the Roman Empire, poor citizens of Rome were allowed to enter a stadium for free, since they were not allowed to join any public or governmental activities and any official decision-making.
Rich citizens bought gorgeous seats to overlook a whole game or race played in a huge stadium, indulging all-day long in gambling about outcomes of games, such as chariot racing, day after day.
Even Roman Emperors often visited a stadium to gain and boost popularity among citizens.
