It hit my antenna that a death toll among swine flu patients has risen to 100 in Japan.
(Of course I might have been one. But It is amazing that Mr. Barack Obama and other African Americans never mind living in Chicago, a very cold city in winter. Have Inuit people changed their DNA to adapt to the ice world? Are polar bears immune to influenza? But, malaria looks personally more terrible than influenza, though Japan is not an epidemic area of malaria.)
You might be now on your way to Copenhagen for the climate change summit, but it is a new type of epidemics, in the worse case, emerging in Northern area getting warmer that you have to pay your attentions to. So, you had better bring medical researchers to Denmark who specialize in mutant bacteria and viruses.
Nonetheless, I have a feeling that cooling potential of the earth on itself is far stronger than global warming energy involving CO2.
At any time, I am afraid, global cooling can begin so mysteriously for mankind, if he looks at the sun displaying less sunspots nowadays...
SECTION I: NO CITY IMMEDIATELY SUCCEEDING ROME
In China, almost without a grave interruption of power and civilization, dynasties were succeeded one after another, one after others, or others after one.
But, things went wired in Southern and Western Europe when Western Roman Empire fell to the ground totally.
No cities in Southern and Western Europe succeeded Rome as the center of power and civilization.
Instead, centuries of desolate situations covered the ex-territory of the Empire and continued for so long without rich documentation and records on the era.
This is the core of the mystery of the fall of the Roman Empire.
It is not all about why and how Western Roman Empire fell.
It is all about why and how no cities in Europe succeeded Rome swiftly, without taking centuries.
It is all about why and how no cities in Europe succeeded Rome so that a void and interruption of power and civilization could be avoided.
History did not see Geneva Empire, Madrid Empire, Paris Empire, or London Empire soon after Imperial Roman troops vanished.
It is indeed as if Europeans had been cursed for centuries until the solid establishment of the Vatican in Rome. The Fall of Rome indeed must be an act of God, namely, an act of Jesus.
Students and professors in history, jurisprudence, economics, business, engineering, and science must focus on why and how no cities succeeded Rome immediately but not on why and how the Empire fell.
(As for East Asia, if China of any past dynasty had fallen and been put into the same status as Western Roman Empire, it must have been very likely that Japan would emerge reasonably soon as the center of power and civilization in any centuries after the 8th...)
