Balloons with Letters to Fukushima
On this March 11, namely one year after March 11, 2011, citizens of Shiga Prefecture, Japan, released to the sky 250 balloons each of which had a letter to victims of the 3/11 Tsunami and the Fukushima Daiichi accident.
Shiga Prefecture is about 350 km west of the Tokyo area which is 220 km southwest of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
Some of the balloons traveled in the air to fall in an agriculture field in Satte City, Saitama Prefecture, which is in part of the Tokyo Area. So, in the morning of March 16, a housewife found a cluster of balloons, though she first thought they were garbage somebody tossed over to her family field. But they were 30 balloons each of which had a letter to victims of the 3/11 Tsunami and the Fukushima Daiichi accident.
As in Satte City there living are scores of refugees from Tomioka Town, situated close to the Fukushima Daiichi plant, she decided to bring the letters to the city office of Tomioka Town which was evacuated and is now provisionally set in Koriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture. Accordingly, good will of Shiga citizens reached to refugees from Fukushima Daiichi, traveling 600 km.
However, there were no report on whereabouts of other 220 balloons. Probably they flew to the Pacific Ocean or fell in mountains around the Tokyo Are or in Fukushima Prefecture.
Generally speaking, wind flows from the west to the east over Japan. Clouds float and move from the west to the east over Honsyu Island where Tokyo is located. So, Shiga people must have thought the balloons would fly to the Tokyo Area and further to Fukushima Prefecture, Miyagi Prefecture and Iwate Prefecture whose Pacific coasts were all hit and severely damaged by the 3/11 Tsunami. But, what was important must have been their good will should be essentially carried to those refugees, evacuees, and victims through the heaven but not by mail being relayed on the ground.
