100,000-Year Periodic Cooling
It is raining around Tokyo today.
But other regions in Japan are suffering snow. It is expected that this winter will bring more snow to Japan than in a usual year.
It is said that when the end of the world is near, the spring and the autumn disappear and one year will have only summer and winter. This really fits the situation we live. The global warming has made the summer continue well into the autumn, thus making the autumn shorter. But the winter comes suddenly without easing its coldness.
Put extremely, the earth could become an ice ball more easily than a scorching globe. So, abundant CO2 now around us might be a good thing to prevent the earth from becoming a snowball earth.

Some Japanese scientists studying a trend of global temperature use ice in Antarctica.
They dug up an ice clump from a location 2503 meters below the surface of an ice sheet covering the Antarctic Continent. It gives them information on global temperature and density of CO2 in the air over past 320,000 years. Their findings are presented in the figure below:
In the above figure the blue line shows a trend of concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the air. The red line represents a transition of temperature.
The horizontal line on the bottom has a scale of depth from the surface of the ice sheet, ranging from 0 meters to 3000 meters. The horizontal line on the upper side is a time scale, with descriptions from 10,000 years ago to 800,000 years ago and ? x 10,000 years ago.
It is clear that both the blue and the red lines show very similar trends. In these 300,000 years, when the concentration of CO2 was high, temperature was also high.
However, 10,000 years ago the atmosphere temperature started to decline, while CO2 density started to increase so sharply above past levels very recently. This is a situation which has never been observed. So, Japanese scientists worry about new drastic phenomena expected to happen sooner or later, since for the first time in these 300,000 years the CO2 density and the global temperature have come to move to opposite directions to each other.
Put simply, the large framework of the nature on the earth is moving toward global cooling. But human civilization has produced so much CO2 delivered to the air, which has triggered the global warming. Presently we might still live in an exquisite balance. But the power of global cooling might eventually overcome the energy for global warming. Or global warming might be further intensified beyond restriction posed by the underlying cooling power.

Japanese and American scientists resolved a question why a glacial age and an inter-glacial stage alternate with each other in a cycle of 100,000 years. This phenomenon came to emerge about 800,000 years ago. In other word, while the human species has been on evolution, he has experienced this circle of change in the global environment.
However, the level of an amount of sunlight the earth receives has changed in a cycle of 20,000 to 40,000 years. There is a big discrepancy between the cycle of a glacial age and that of sunlight intensity. The scientists found that it is caused by interaction between the air, ice sheets, and the earth's crust in their response to the cycle of sunlight intensity.

Most importantly this 100,000-year periodic global cooling is not influenced by CO2 density. Therefore, the environment is still going to be cool regardless of an increase in CO2 concentration in the air or despite CO2-induced effect of global warming.
That is why winter is getting colder while summer is going hotter on the earth as observed today.
