Drugs and violence are so prevalent in the US.

In other statistics, 716 out of 100,000 Americans are in jails, which is the world No.1.  In this statistics about 223 countries, Japan is the 196th with 54 out of 100,000 Japanese put in jails.

(2014) Of the 1,561,231 arrests for drug law violations in 2014, 83.1% (1,297,384) were for possession of a controlled substance. Only 16.9% (263,848) were for the sale or manufacturing of a drug.
(2013) Of the 1,501,043 arrests for drug law violations in 2013, 82.3% (1,235,358) were for possession of a controlled substance. Only 17.7% (265,685) were for the sale or manufacturing of a drug.
(2012) Of the 1,552,432 arrests for drug law violations in 2012, 82.2% (1,276,099) were for possession of a controlled substance. Only 17.8% (276,333) were for the sale or manufacturing of a drug.
(2011) Of the 1,531,251 arrests for drug law violations in 2011, 81.8% (1,252,563) were for possession of a controlled substance. Only 18.2% (278,687) were for the sale or manufacturing of a drug.

In 1973, there were 328,670 arrests reported by the FBI's Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) for drug law violations, out of a total 9,027,700 arrests nationwide for all offenses. Also that year, authorities reported 380,560 arrests for all violent crimes and 1,448,700 arrests for all property offenses. 

In 2014, there were 1,561,231 arrests for drug law violations out of a total 11,205,833 arrests nationwide for all offenses. Also in 2014, authorities reported 498,666 arrests for all violent crimes and 1,553,980 arrests for all property offenses.

 So, 1.5 million Americans are arrested annually for drug-related crimes, which suggest more than 15 million Americans are using drugs.

Nearly 20 percent of whites have used cocaine, compared with 10 percent of blacks and Latinos, according to a 2011 survey from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration — the most recent data available.

Higher percentages of whites have also tried hallucinogens, marijuana, pain relievers like OxyContin, and stimulants like methamphetamine, according to the survey. Crack is more popular among blacks than whites, but not by much.

In 2007, according to the UCR, law enforcement agencies nationwide made an estimated 14 million arrests for all criminal infractions except traffic violations. Among the specific categories, the highest arrest counts were --

• 1.8 million for drug abuse violations;

• approximately 1.4 million for driving under the influence;

• 1.3 million for simple assaults; and

• 1.2 million for larceny-thefts.

But how much money is involved in the illegal drug-related business?

In January 2012, the U.S. White House Office of National Drug Control Policy asked RAND to generate national estimates of market sizes for four illicit drugs: cocaine (including crack), heroin, marijuana, methamphetamine (meth). (RAND was not asked to assess prescription drug misuse.) Using data from 2000 to 2010 for each drug, the study estimated the number of users, expenditures, and consumption. The results show that drug users in the United States spend on the order of $100 billion annually on all four drugs (in 2010 dollars). This figure has been stable over the decade, but there have been important shifts in the drugs being purchased.

When Obama became US President in 2009, the number of Arrests for Illicit Drugs Annually in the US was 1,663,582.  And the number in 2014 was 1,561,231.  President Obama cannot improve the situation so much.

But, if Trump becomes US President, less improvement is expected, though he doesn't use any drugs.
