"Lord, save us: we perish" - A Reversed Image of a Reversed Object

Island on the Pacific Coast 100 km west of Tokyo

A Reversed Image of a Reversed Object

I was sitting in a fast food shop, reading a newspaper.

Behind my chair was a wall on which a round clock was hung.  And, there on the wall opposite me was a mirror.  I watched the mirror to see the clock just fully reflected on its surface.  Numbers of the clock looked opposite, and the second hand was moving counter-clockwise in the mirror.  I happened to realize that I had never observed that the second hand of a clock in the mirror was rotating fully 360 degrees counter-clockwise.

There is nothing inside the mirror.  Light is just reflected on its surface very honestly, so that an image looks opposite horizontally.  We are seeing an image of an object reflected by the surface of a mirror.  That reflection makes the object opposite horizontally to the original object.

If we observe any event by ourselves, we can comprehend it as it is.  But if we learn the event from somebody else while he is reflecting the event in his mind, we may judge it based on an image of the event reversed by him.

I was watching the image of the clock horizontally reversed.  But, if I had not realized the very existence of the mirror, I might have believed that this shop had a clock horizontally opposite to normal ones.  With just one simple device called a mirror, something that does not exist in this world comes to emerge as if it did exist.  And, if we do not realize existence of the mirror, we cannot judge if it is real or not.

When we judge the world and any human matters, we may make a similar mistake.  Everything we conceive in the world is reflected by many and various mirrors.  We have to know what kinds of mirrors exist around us or between us and the society.

But what if a mirror itself was reversed?  It could show what we want to see as it is.  Then there might be rather confusion; we have to make a difference between a real object and its image.  But what if a real object was reversed?

Then I read a column in the newspaper on the desk in front of me.

Once in an entrance interview to a naval academy of the Imperial Japanese Navy, a unique question was asked: if a rope circling the earth was prolonged by 3 meters (9.8 feet or so), how high it will be above the ground to circle the earth without a slack.  Each applicant was requested to calculate the answer in his head.  The answer is 48 cm (19 inches)

So, if you add only 3 meters to 40,075 km of a rope running on the ground around the earth, you can have an influence on every point on the earth by automatically lifting the rope by almost 0.5 meters.  This scale of 3 m is what an individual can handle, though it is impossible to manipulate the whole length of 40,075 km.  Even Columbus would be find it difficult with an egg in his hand.

Subsequently, I folded the newspaper and left the fast food shop where I paid 100 yen ($1) for a cup of iced coffee and another 100 yen for an apple pie bar.  Each custom usually paied 500 yen or more for foods and a drink.  But, a shop staff girl saw me off with a polite attitude just like she had showed it when she took order from me.

So, I thought that if a homeless man had 200 yen, he could at least take iced coffee and an apple pie bar.  And, I believe that shop staff would show pleasant attitudes to him, since he is going to pay 200 yen.

And, in the fast food shop, when the homeless man saw a mirror, he might find him very rich.

Mat 8:24 And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep.
Mat 8:25 And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.
Mat 8:26 And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.

"he asked him if he saw ought" - A Summer Trip with a Hidden Angel of Death

Pacific Coast around Tokyo

A Summer Trip with a Hidden Angel of Death

I was thinking about life and death sitting in a train.  And, a decent old man with a summer hat and mourning dress-like dark clothes was sitting on an opposite couch, reading a book.

I was thinking that God should send an angel of death to a man destined to soon face his own death prior to his death.  Then he has to stand before God for the final judgment.  Most of people would be condemned to the hell.  Subsequently Satan should appear to such people, requesting their souls since they must have sold their souls for wealth and happiness in this world to Satan.  I wondered if Satan would rather appear before the last judgment or immediately after their death.

I was sitting in the train for almost one and a half hours.  Finally, the decent old man got off the train.  I was thinking how anyone can design elementary particles, electrons, and photons (light) so that they form atoms, molecules, chemical compounds, rocks, stones, clouds, plants, animals, and finally human beings that have souls working above the material world.  Only God can design such physical conditions to create living things and human beings eventually.

In the train, almost every passenger was using smart phones.  Only children and parents were happily talking to one another, since they are in summer holidays.  Therefore, a great amount of electric magnetic fields and radio waves were flying, floating, and vibrating in the air of the car of the train where I was sitting.  Then I started to think how can our brains produce souls and spirits to imagine God, Heaven, angles, and other spiritual entities with belief and confidence.

Our material brains must be a kind of smartphones.  On the display of a smartphone, we can retrieve a picture of, say, Mt. Fuji, through Internet connection.  It can be live images of the mountain being taken by a video camera set around Mt. Fuji and being sent to the smartphone in real time.  Mt. Fuji is a real thing.  But its image on the display is not a real thing.  However, we can check a real state of Mt. Fuji in real time.  This scheme can apply to Heaven and our brains.  Heaven is a real entity, existent in the spiritual universe, and we can see it in our brains like a smartphone showing Mt. Fuji.

Watching landscapes along a railway line out of the window, I thought that the summer always comes every year while many people are dying every year.  However, I didn't see any ominous things in this journey, though a train delayed for 13 minutes in a 2-hour return trip to home.

When I got back home, a TV program presented a documentary about the new volcanic island in the process of building up, covering and absorbing adjacent Nishinoshima Island in the Pacific Ocean 1,000 km south of Tokyo.  A scientist said it was not an ordinary process of creation of a volcanic island.  It is a rare case that the process of creation of a volcanic island resembles that of creation of a continent, since this volcanic island contains light rocks like a continent though volcanic islands are usually made of heavy rocks.  Accordingly, this new volcanic island would not sink into magma to disappear in the ocean eventually.  Japan is expected to have a new territory in the Pacific Ocean near the Ogasawara Islands.

The volcano of this new-born island looks like a miniature version of Mt. Fuji, though Mt. Fuji does not emit smokes like this new one.  However, a million years later, present Mt. Fuji might be gone after a big eruption, while this new volcano becomes 4,000 meters high to be a successor of Mt. Fuji for the future Japanese.  Indeed, it was undersea volcanic activities one million years ago that paved the way for building up of Mt. Fuji, though it was 100,000 years ago that Mt. Fuji was actively and decisively formed.

Finally, it is not unlucky to live and die in a country where Mt. Fuji exists, I reckoned.

In addition, I saw a little angel like a small child in the train, and she said, "Where are you going?" watching me walking an aisle in a car.  I said in the mind, "I read the Bible which indicated a place."

"he went into a ship with his disciples" - An Episode of a Notable Japanese Christian in WWII

A Shinto Shrine around Tokyo

An Episode of a Notable Japanese Christian in WWII

I saw a car with the license plate number including only 1 in its four digit component.  It was not 90-01, 8-01, 11 or any such number; it was just "1."

Then I saw another car with the license plate number including only 2 in its four digit component.  And then, I saw another car with the license plate number including only 3 in its four digit component.  It happened within two hours.  Of course many other cars were running on roads with plate numbers such as 44-82, 9-73, 23, etc.

Such an experience has been very rare even on streets around Tokyo where you can encounter thousands of cars in 2 hours.

But what did I do meanwhile?  I was standing on a sacred pond of a shinto shrine.  Its dirk green water was muddy and murky, since the shrine was reportedly first built 1000 years ago or before.  But I could spot some large carps.  Red, white, mixed-color, and black carps were swimming actively without minding quality of water.

Then I moved to another pond adjacent to the shrine.  Its water was clear and pellucid, since fresh water is provided through a tiny channel running from a Japanese garden.  And I could also spot some large carps.  Red, white, mixed-color, and black carps were swimming actively without appreciating quality of water.

When I returned to my residence, I read a book about how Imperial Japanese soldiers had treated Chinese citizens they suspected as spies (without solid proof) and Chinese prisoners of war during WWII.  Put simply, Japanese troops regarded all the Chinese as their enemies so that they executed most of those unlucky Chinese who had fallen into the hands of Japanese soldiers.  Especially, Imperial Army's regiments of military policemen were in charge of cruel investigation and execution of suspected Chinese whether or not they were civilians or soldiers.

But the most interesting is an episode that Toyohiko Kagawa, the most notable Japanese Christian priest before, during, and after WWII, visited Beijing during the war.  A Japanese Christian medical doctor then working in Beijing told Kagawa the real state of occupation of Beijing by the Japanese Imperial Army.  Japanese soldiers were too easily killing Chinese people on the dubious grounds for spying or sometimes without any serious reasoning.  The doctor asked Kagawa to go back to Japan, publicly inform against brutal practices of Japanese soldiers to Chinese citizens, and work on the Imperial Government and the general public so as to stop these cruel conduct.

However Kagawa did not do anything helpful to poor Chinese victims.  Rather, many Japanese Christians, including those associated with Kagawa, announced their strong support for the Imperial Government in its execution of wars against China and even the US.  Indeed, there were almost no Japanese Christians who blamed the Imperial Government and military for cruel treatment of innocent Chinese and other Asian citizens during WWII.

Nonetheless, after WWII, when the Japanese medical doctor came back to Japan, Toyohiko Kagawa visited him for apology for his negligence despite an ardent request from the doctor to give warning of atrocity of the war in China to the Japanese public.

Toyohiko Kagawa had been well known, even before WWII, not only in Japan but also in the US due to his self-sacrificing contribution to improvement of living environments of poor Japanese people.  He continued his mission after WWII.  As General MacArthur, who led the US military in occupation of Japan after the War, was a devout Christian, Kagawa's reputation widely prevailed in the Japanese society that was afresh turning the eye to Christianity after the defeat by the Christian country America.  Even the Emperor invited Kagawa to the Imperial Palace to listen to Kagawa in person to understand his work, specifically, in 1947.  (And later in 1950, Kagawa traveled to the US for Christian activities to receive a doctorate from a certain US university.)

So, I considered anew that this issue of how Imperial Japanese soldiers conducted in China in WWII is a very sinful one.

(Nonetheless, it is also true that Chinese leaders in WWII or before WWII did not make serious efforts to avoid the war with the Empire of Japan.  Some of Chinese politicians actually welcomed military advance of the Imperial military forces deep into China, since it would make their position relatively better against their own enemies among the Chinese in the civil war that had been going on since 1890s.

Or it is also a fact that Chinese politicians and generals launched a war against Imperial Japanese troops stationed in limited cities and areas in China, believing that they could easily defeat the Japanese troops, but they failed in a disastrous scale.)

Now, I wonder if any miracles happened today except those license plate numbers of cars.

"thy heart is not right in the sight of God" - The Closest Official to the Emperor

Along a National Road around Tokyo

The Closest Official to the Emperor

Sukemasa Irie (1905-1985) was not an ordinary man.  He and his family had been so close to Emperor Showa (1901-1989) of Japan.  Irie himself was the closest official to Emperor Showa.

Irie's parental family line could be traced back in history to the Fujiwara clan or Michizane Fujiwara, one of the most influential noblemen 1000 years ago whose daughters became empresses of three emperors.  Specifically, the Irie family was a branch house of the Reizei house, notable for its mastership in 31-syllable Japanese poem called waka.

Irie's mother was a niece of the biological mother of the father of Emperor Showa, that is, Emperor Taisho who was the son of Meiji Emperor.  Irie's father, a viscount, served the Imperial Family as the grand chamberlain for the crown prince (who later ascended to Emperor Taisho) and so on.

So, it was natural that Sukemasa Irie became professor in Gakushyuin University (originally founded for education of children of imperial families and the noble class) after graduating from the literature department of the Imperial University of Tokyo.  And it was more natural that he soon quit the academic job to work in the Imperial Household Ministry in 1934.  Since then Irie had been close to Emperor Showa through the long period of time before, during, and after WWII.  He wrote many books about his experiences in the Imperial Palace and his private life.

Immediately after WWII, when Irie was walking around his house in Tokyo, a jeep of US military stopped before him.  An American officer asked Irie how to get to Sophia University, a Catholic university in Tokyo.  Irie tried to tell the way, speaking English.  But as it was somewhat complicated, he thought it would be easier to guide the jeep, taking a ride on it.  So, after some driving through streets of Tokyo still full of air-bombed buildings and debris, the US jeep could reach the University.

The American officer was so thankful that he asked Irie whether he was a professor of the University.  Irie could not reveal that he was an official close to the Imperial House.  He said that he had been a professor of another university.  The US officer showed gladly his appreciation again, since Irie was not an ordinary man as he thought.

After this episode, Irie thought if he had been able to speak English better at the time, he might have been more respected.

Later, when Japan was still under occupation of the US military led by General MacArthur, the Emperor spent some days in an Imperial villa in Hayama Town, west of Tokyo Bay.

One day, the Empress went out to visit some war victims in another town with many officials and attendants.  Meanwhile, the Emperor decided to take a walk on the shore before the villa.  But, as most of officials and caretakers of the Imperial Family had gone with the Empress, only Irie and a policeman followed the Emperor.

When the three men were strolling around the coast line of Sagami Bay, where the Emperor sometimes conducted biological study, there appeared two young American soldiers with a camera.  They were excited to happen to meet the Japanese emperor.  They asked the Emperor whether they could take pictures of him.  To a surprise to Irie, the Emperor approved the unprecedented wild action.  But the soldiers asked further to have each of them stand by the Emperor to be taken in pictures.  Irie thought it was too much, shouting, "Only, Emperor, Alone!"  The two American soldiers understood the word, and yet gladly photographed the Emperor alone in the film.

After this episode, Irie wondered if his English had been so correct.

Decades later, Sukemasa Irie, grand chamberlain, wrote that speaking a foreign language was making a fool of oneself.  His son could not speak English much better than his father, but he had some American friends and traveled to America sometimes.  It must be because, Irie thought, his son was more shameless than his father.

Incidentally, it is reportedly said that Emperor Showa had a reasonable level of ability in English and French as he was also a biologist, though an interpreter was always present when the Emperor met with General MacArthur in person.

"Noah builded an altar unto the LORD" - Meiji Emperor and Hirobumi Ito

A Gate of Imperial Palace Plaza (old Edo Castle of Tokugawa shogun), Tokyo

Meiji Emperor and Hirobumi Ito

Early in the morning of February 4, 1904, the Emperor of Japan called Hirubumi Ito.

At the time, the Imperial Government had to decide whether it should venture into war against the Russian Empire or accept expansion of aggressive Russian influences on Manchuria, North China, the Korean Peninsula, and other regions around the Sea of Japan, southeast of Siberia.  The war, if any, would be a very risky one for the Empire of Japan just in the middle of the process of its industrial revolution.  And on the very day, a supreme conference in the presence of the Emperor was to be held in the Imperial Palace, Tokyo.

Hirobumi Ito, who was then not only Chairman of the Privy Council but also the politician most trusted by the Emperor, came to curt. The Emperor wearing night clothes invited Ito into his private room. Such an invitation had never happened before; no political leaders and dignitaries as well as other people in high positions in the Empire never entered the private space of the Emperor in the Imperial Palace.  It was unprecedented.  And the Emperor just put on night clothes with the worn-out look.

Hirobumi Ito was a very special politician.  He was the unparalleled successor of the Three Great Heroes of the Meiji Restoration (Saigo, Okubo, and Kido) that had brought the imperial court back to political power through a civil war against the Tokugawa samurai regime in 1868.  Though all these Heroes had been gone due to another civil war, an assassination, and fatal illness), Ito continued to make his career to become the first prime minister of Japan in 1885.

Ito was so much trusted by the Emperor who had been just a teenager when the Meiji Restoration was carried out by the Three Great Heroes of Meiji and other radical but pro-imperial samurais, including Hirobumi Ito.  The young Emperor had been educated by ex-samurais who took over power from the Tokugawa shogun.  But old ex-samurais had gone away or became so old.  Now, Hirobumi Ito played a role of a kind of senior friend of the Emperor.  While other ministers and politicians never sat before the Emperor when they saw him in person, only Ito casually seated himself into a chair.  Indeed, it was Hirobumi Ito who had contributed to promulgation of the Constitution of the Imperial Japan in 1989, setting the foundation of the Empire and the legal basis of the position of the Emperor.

The Emperor asked Ito how he thought about the coming war with the Russian Empire.  He wanted an honest opinion from trustworthy Ito prior to the supreme conference scheduled on the day.  The Emperor, originally having nothing to do with samurai warrior tradition, had been so much bothered about the possible war with Russia.  The Russian Empire had the world largest army and the mighty navy; how could the Empire of Japan whose modernization had started just 25 years ago fight the Russian Empire on equal terms?

Ito answered, "There is a possibility that our country will face a critical result.  In that case, your majesty has to prepare to meet your fate (you might be requested to step down from the imperial throne if the Empire of Japan should be defeated)."

In the conference, the Emperor expressed his strong concern.  He proposed that he would directly contact to the Russian Emperor as both the governments could not find a solution for peace.  The Emperor worried that many Japanese soldiers would be killed if the outbreak of war had been unavoidable.   But, top politicians, ministers and generals who attended the conference suggested that no such efforts would be too late.  The  empire was in an imminently dangerous situation, since no diplomatic negotiations had been successful while Russians looked like being determined to attack the imperial troops stationed in the Korean Peninsula that had been under strong control of the Imperial Japan for years.

Finally, Meiji Emperor under heavy tension consented to opening war with the Russian Empire.  Everybody in the room felt huge pressure in their silence.  But Ito said, "Now that his majesty has made a great decision, I will also work hard as a young samurai, which I was decades ago, neglecting my appearance and dress (as if I had been again in the war for the Meiji Restoration)."  To Ito's banter, every war leader in the supreme conference in the Imperial Palace started to laugh as they knew well Ito's past, a young and dangerous samurai without much care about his dress.

After the conference, Ito immediately sent a special envoy to the US, since it was only America that could play the role of mediator when the time came to make a truce with the Russian military.  (The UK was then allied with the Empire of Japan based on the Anglo-Japanese Alliance, providing some indirect support for Tokyo.)  Hirobumi Ito with rich international experiences knew well that the Empire of Japan could fight a full-scale war with the Russian Empire only for a few years.  Tokyo needed a strong foreign friend who would help settle the war in favor of Japan eventually.

The Japanese-Russo War was fought between 1904 and 1905.  The Empire of Japan could hold a dominant position as its army drove Russian troops from areas near the Korean Peninsula and South Manchuria and its navy destroyed the Russian fleet around the Tsushima Straits and the Sea of Japan.  US President Theodore Roosevelt helped Japan in the post-war negotiations held in Portsmouth, Virginia.  Roosevelt was later awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his effort in helping the Empire of Japan and the Russian Empire conclude the Portsmouth Peace Treaty.

Incidentally, Hirobumi Ito was assassinated in Manchuria in 1909 by a Korean terrorist.  Meiji Emperor died in 1912.

Indeed, a century ago, Japan was led by ex-samurai politicians and an emperor who was just a teenager when the samurai regime fell paving the way for Westernization and at the same time restoration of imperial authority in the Japanese society.  The tragic and glorious 20th century of Japan began with such figures, good or bad.

"the five loaves among five thousand" - Hidden Foods and Hidden Power

Entrances to Shinto Shrines around Tokyo

Hidden Foods and Hidden Power

When thousands of people came to a small mountain to hear Christ Jesus preaching, most of them secretly brought bread and other foods with them in case that this event should take a long time.

But as they were somewhat selfish without big love to share their foods with other people, they hid their foods in their clothes, bags, or the like.  However, Christ Jesus could see their minds and their foods hidden so well, so that He instructed His disciples to circulate baskets in which He expected those people to honestly deliver part of their hidden foods in order to help those who had actually little or no foods.

It was neither a trick nor a magic.

In a similar way, Greece can be saved if all the Greeks deliver money they are hiding to help poor neighbors in the country.

In a similar way, the world can be saved if all the human beings deliver money they are hiding to help poor people in the world.

This issue is also related to power of a mass of people.  If 12 people combine their power and ability to a certain direction, we can expect a great result.  But if 12 people randomly deliver their power canceling effect of their respective power, we can expect no great result.

Another important point is that these lessons can even apply to a single man.

If one man continues to hide his foods, he will starve to death.  If one man continues to hide his true power and ability, he cannot achieve a great thing.  But to take out his power and ability fully with confidence, he needs guidance.  And the best guidance is the teaching of Christ Jesus.

It also tells why the US has succeeded in becoming the most successful country in the world.  Its basic culture led by Christianity (and Judaism) with less restriction and negative traditions of types often observed in Europe under strong influences of the Vatican has made it easier for each American to deliver their power and ability fully.  And Americans have had a common direction, the American Dream.  To this direction, they all have contributed their efforts in building and developing a nation, America.  This is the key to their success.

So, any poor countries in the world can succeed in building successful society if they understand this episode in the Bible and apply this teaching of Christ Jesus.

"for whosoever hath, to him shall be given" - Given More or Deprived More

Around the Imperial Palace, Tokyo

Given More or Deprived More

Christ Jesus said: For to the one who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

If two seeds are sown to one plot and both spring forth, there can be some differences between them.  One shoot might grow more correctly to the sky or the heaven, while another may be biased to the west, the east, and so on.  If nutrition in the ground is limited, the nature would allow the shoot correctly directed to the heaven to take more nutrition than another.  Even nutrient elements around the shoot looking to other direction than the heaven might be taken by the straight one.

However, this can apply to worldly mechanisms and systems.  The more you have faith in any organization where you belong, the more you are given by the management of the organization.  If you have less faith in business of the organization, you would be deprived of high salary and higher status.

The reason is that any system is purposely-operated.  It pursues more efficiency and higher results.  To achieve this goal, it has to concentrate its resources to hopeful members even by taking away some having been allocated to lazy members and giving them to the hopeful.

Looking back at evolution of living things on this earth, every species has developed following this rule.  The species today we can see have been all given chances to survive and grow according to their faithfulness to required conditions in given environments in the nature.  The more a species is faithful to environmental conditions and changes, the more it has a chance of survival and evolution.

Now, we can understand why Judaists, Christians, and Muslims have survived to date through long history.  They had more what was requested by God; accordingly they were given more chances of survival.

Taking both applications of this teaching of Christ Jesus to the material world and the spiritual world, we can understand why it is said in some prophecies:
In the end of the world, the rich would become richer, while the poor become poorer.
And, the righteous become more righteous, while the evil become more evil.

What is happening in the Middle East and the Islamic world looks like an example of embodiment of these prophecies.

Or the Greeks and African Americans might understand the teaching of Christ Jesus better than rich Europeans and Americans.

Conversely, we can expect that there are extremely pious Muslims and Christians around the Middle East, Greece, and African-America populated streets in the US.

"the testimony of two men is true" - The Kingdom of Heaven and the End of the World

Around Tokyo

The Kingdom of Heaven and the End of the World

Christ Jesus said: “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field.  It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”
The Kingdom of Heaven is a kind of spiritual entity.  But we often consider it in analogy with a material entity.  And Christ Jesus must have known that we do so.

From a historical point of view, it was Christ Jesus that took and sowed a small seed in this world 2000 years ago.  And as he preached, the Kingdom of Heaven started from one man, Christ Jesus, to cover the whole world today, if you believe the teaching of Christ is the foundation of the Kingdom of Heaven.  Influences of Christ Jesus can be seen in many fields of human activities in the world, including literature and art.

But, Christ Jesus also predicted the end of the world coming with some horrible tragedies.  Then, what is the relationship between the Kingdom of Heaven and the end of the world?  Does it mean that even if our souls come to live in the Kingdom of Heaven, our physical bodies are destined for experiencing the end of the material world?

The Kingdom of Heaven belongs to the spiritual sphere, but the concept of the end of the world is related to this material world.  They might coexist, somewhat overlapping with each other through our real existence across the spiritual and material worlds.

Another issue of the Kingdom of Heaven is as to whether this concept can apply to other religions, such as Judaism and Islam.

Probably, Muslims enter the Kingdom of God through their religion Islam; Judaists enter the Kingdom of God through their religion Judaism; and Christians enter the Kingdom of God through their religion Christianity.  They will live in the world where the only religion in it is called the Kingdom of God.  Truly, if Muslims, Judaists, and Christians all reach their destination, the Kingdom of God, through their respective religions, they don't need their own religions any more.

Indeed, Muslims in the Kingdom of Heaven would say, "We were followers of Islam before, but now we are residents in the Kingdom of Heaven"; Judaists in the Kingdom of Heaven would say, "We were members of Judaism before, but now we are members in the Kingdom of Heaven"; and Christians in the Kingdom of Heaven would say, "We were members of Christianlty before, but now we are residents in the Kingdom of Heaven."

However, meanwhile this material world, including the communities of Muslims, Judaists, and Christians, might all face the end.

In that case, the whole world might be put into devastating confusion and catastrophe.  In the worst case, terrorists might use advanced weapons of mass destruction in Europe, the Middle East, North America, and so on, resulting in the fall of this modern civilization that has been built in these 2000 years after the emergence of Christ Jesus.

Terauchi was born in a middle-class family and graduated from a university where he learnt electric engineering.  However he loved to play the guitar and joined a band that was performing in US military bases around Tokyo, which was a kind of common process of many Japanese musicians who succeeded in their careers after WWII.

One thing unique about Terauchi was his knowledge about electricity, so that he contributed to development of  electronic musical instruments in Japan, while he was making his career as an electric guitar player and a band leader.

Another unique aspect of Terauchi is that he has given a performance in high schools to deepen understanding of electric-guitar based music among students, teachers, parents, and so on.

Once the Japanese public was very critical about high-school students who played electric guitars.  Parents, teachers, and the public were afraid that students enchanted by electric guitar playing might be easily led to delinquency.  However, young people loved rock music and electric guitar sounds, since some American bands, such as the Ventures, visited Japan in early 1960s to introduce such music as a kind of new culture to Japanese youths.

So, Terauchi started to visit and play in high schools. And Terauchi Takeshi and The Blue Jeans have reportedly played in 1,500 high schools in Japan to date, though it is unknown how much the concert fee is.

However when he first launched this project, it did not look like hopeful.  Terauch visited, at the first onset, 100 high schools to offer and explain the high school concert.  But only three of them treated the offer seriously, and offered Terauchi, a leading guitarist in Japan, a cup of tea in their meeting.  No other high school management presented hospitality to the famous rock guitarist as they were afraid of a bad influence commercial entertainers would have on their students.

It reminds me of a teaching by Christ Jesus: Those who gave a cup of cooled water to each of these tiny people would receive reward from God.

(Refer to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2TZ8EJD8K8 for Takeuchi's performance.)

Another situation that reminds me of the Christ's teaching was that those hit by the atomic bomb in Hiroshima in 1941 and lied down on the street asked others walking by to give them a cup of water, since they were suffering so much with burns.  And, there were some people who really gave them water from their drinking flasks to those victims under the hot sun in August 1941.

"and the fever left her" - 70 Years since WWII

Around Tokyo

70 Years since WWII

This is the 70th year since the end of the Second World War.

However, what has happened in these 70 years is as important as what had happened during and before WWII, since we are living in the ear of 2000 years after the emergence of Christ.

As for Japan, every decade after 1945 has been so symbolic.

1945 - The End of WWII and the Empire of Japan with atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki

1955 - Sony (then called Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo) releases its first transistor radio; Toyota launches its symbolic upper-class car Crown.  The Liberal Democratic Part is established as the only major conservative/pro-American party to rule Japan till 1993.

1965 - The Anti-Vietnam War Peace Movement is launched in Japan; the Shinkansen bullet train, introduced in 1964, starts to connect Tokyo and Osaka (550 km) in 3 hours and 10 minutes; and the first full-scale inter-city expressway of Japan is completed between Nagoya and Kobe.

1975 - The Emperor and Empress of Japan officially visits the US; Sony release its first videotape recorder; and the Vietnam War ends.

1985 - A Tokyo-to-Osaka jumbo jet liner carrying more than 500 passengers (including major corporate employees) crashes in a mountainous area north of Tokyo; The Plaza Accord is reached among five major countries (the US, Japan, the UK, West Germany, and France) leading to the declining of the dollar value versus the yen by 51% from 1985 to 1987.

1995 - The Great Hanshin Earthquake occurs west of Osaka/Kyoto, sacrificing 6,000 people, while a cult launches a sarin gas attack in Tokyo subway lines, killing a dozen and injuring 6,000 commuters, etc.

The latter half of the 20th century of Japan started with some hope but ended with ominous incidents.

But in the 21st century a series of years to focus on may change.

2001 - The 9/11 Terror Attack in New York and Washington gravely affects Japan.

2005 - Large-scale anti-Japanese demonstrations erupt in major cities in China, since Beijing needs to make the Chinese people hate Japan to consolidate its domestic reign.

2008 - A large-scale financial crisis starts in Wall Street to gravely affect Japan, paving the way for Obama's winning in presidential election.

2011 - An M9.0 earthquake hits northeast Japan, killing almost 19,000 people, to trigger big tsunamis and the subsequent Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Accident.

2015 - The Abe Cabinet is trying to expand the scope of operations of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces beyond restriction of the Constitution for the first time after WWII, in order to allow for more aggressive activities of the Forces mainly to cope with the Chinese military expansion.

Japan and the world are all the more facing wars, economic crises, natural disasters, industrial disasters, and political/diplomatic crises.  Truly Japan and the world are still around the end of the world.

Prophecies of Christ Jesus must come true in Japan and the world.

Personally, I think I have been somewhat connected to most of those incidents.

Mat 8:15 And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them.

"the disciples had forgotten to take bread" - Servants and Wallets

Just around Tokyo

Servants and Wallets

Christ Jesus said that those who want to be leaders of people must serve them as servants.

And to teach what being a servant means Christ Jesus cleaned and washed the feet of His disciples with wet clothes.  This is a well known episode in the Bible.

Shigeru Yoshida (1878-1967) who happened to become a counterpart to General MacArthur as prime minister of Japan after WWII between 1948 and 1954 once went to a social party where many leaders of various sectors of Japan gathered.  But as Yoshida met someone he didn't like, he left the party soon.  However, after having carried Yoshida to the party, Yoshida's car left the place as it was to come back around the time when the party would be over, so that he had to call a taxi.  Then, Yoshida went to a department store, one of the largest ones in Tokyo.  But when he got off the taxi, he had no money.  It is because Yoshida never had a wallet; he did not have a custom to carry a wallet with him.  So, Yoshida, probably at the time ex-prime minister, told a stuff member of the department shop at the entrance to pay the taxi fair for him.  Later his younger daughter called the president of the department store, apologizing Yoshida's rude attitude and promising to send money to the stuff member.

Ysohida's younger daughter married a rich businessman named Takakichi Aso.  The Aso clan accumulated fortune and wealth as a coal owner in Kyusyu.  Takakichi Aso liked his father-in-law, so that he also became a politician.  As a national lawmaker, Aso helped Prime Minister Yoshida who took a huge responsibility in the process of recovering war-torn Japan through difficult negotiations with General MacArthur, the supreme commander of US forces stationed in Japan after WWII.  But as a politician, Yoshida needed political money.  Yoshida had to distribute money to lawmakers of his political party to maintain his position.  It is Aso that supplied a huge amount of money for Yoshida's political machinations, since Shigeru Yoshida, an ex-diplomat, had no other source of big money.

Yoshida worked very well even as an intermediate between the Emperor and General MacArthur.  The good relationship between the Emperor and General MacArthur was one of Yoshida's feats.  And their relationship contributed to good relationship between Japan and the US after WWII.  General MacArthur showed necessary respect for the Emperor, though the General never visited the Imperial Palace.  The Emperor visited the US embassy in Tokyo where General MacArthur lived to directly talk with the General 11 times till his departure from Japan in 1951 to promote mutual understanding.  Especially, the Emperor never showed his grudge to the US, though the Empire of Japan was even attacked with atomic bombs by the US in WWII, which suggested to the Japanese people that Japan should become a friendly nation to the US, now that the war was over.  And the then PM Yoshida contributed to this good relationship between the Emperor and General MacArthur.

Probably, the Emperor had no wallet.  General MacArthur had no wallet, either.  They were the people who did not need money and wallets.  Accordingly, the three persons must have felt intimacy to one another.

And, in ancient days, servants must not have their wallets.  Though the Emperor, General MacArthur, and PM Yoshida were at the top of the social hierarchy in Japan under occupation by the US military after WWII, they had at least something common with ancient servants: they never carried wallets.

It is indeed very difficult for an emperor, a supreme commander of military forces, or a prime minister to become servants to the nation, soldiers, or voters.

(Note: It is not confirmed whether General MacArthur carried a wallet during his days in Tokyo.)

Anyway, the three main players in Japan under occupation of US military forces after WWII were the Emperor (of Showa), General Douglas MacArthur, and Prime Minister Shigeru Yoshida.

"choked with cares and riches" - Controversial Kamikaze Attack on August 15, 1945

Around the Imperial Palace, Tokyo

Controversial Kamikaze Attack on August 15, 1945

There was an admiral of the Imperial Navy of Japan during WWII who carried out a kamikaze suicide attack after the Emperor announced his decision to surrender to the allied forces at noon of August 15, 1945, by radio to the general public of the Empire.
Matome Ugaki (1890–1945) was an admiral in the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II, remembered for his extensive and revealing war diary, role at the Battle of Leyte Gulf, and kamikaze suicide hours after the announced surrender of Japan at the end of the war.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matome_Ugaki
The controversy about his act is mainly related to the fact that Admiral Ugaki did not pilot a military plane by himself but he led 11 Imperial Navy bombers to the post-surrender kamikaze attack, though three bombers made emergency landing before reaching a target sea area around Okinawa.  Ugaki forced 16 airmen of the Imperial Navy to die in the post-surrender kamikaze attack.

At least two of those kamikaze bombers led by Ugaki reached an island of Okinawa, and crashed on rocks on the shore and the ground beside a US military base, respectively.  No American military's damage was confirmed.  Admiral Ugaki is believed to have been on the bomber that fell on the rocks on the shore.  Officers who piloted these bombers seem to have avoided hitting their planes to American military ships or troops on purpose.

Admiral Ugaki before his Kamikaze Attack
http://www.geocities.jp/torikai007/war/1945/ugaki.html

Admiral Ugaki, as Chief-of-Staff of the Combined Fleet under Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, had been so close to Admiral Yamamoto.  Yamamoto was the planner of the 1941 Pearl Harbor Attack.  Following the direct order from Yamamoto, an imperial fleet with six aircraft carriers attacked US bases in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, to start the war against America.

But, while Admiral Yamamoto was making an inspection tour to Solomon in the South Pacific in 1943, a plane he was on was shot down by US fighters.  (It is said that Yamamoto's flying plan had been known to the US military forces beforehand through decoding of secret messages having been sent by the Imperial Navy.)  Admiral Ugaki accompanied Yamamoto on this tour.  The plane carrying Ugaki was also shot down, but Ugaki survived.  Later, Ugaki received Yamamoto's dagger as a memento.

According to some report, some airmen mobilized for this post-surrender kamikaze attack led by Admiral Ugaki were not informed of the Emperor's radio address, and thus they did not realize the war was over.  Therefore, this kamikaze attack has been under criticism and not counted as a legitimate one carried out following an official order of the imperial military.

But what influence has this episode had on the Japanese people after WWII?

At least the Japanese people have come to abhor the rule by military after WWII.

When a war is being won due to brave acts of the military, the public naturally respect generals and bellicose politicians.  But even if a war is being lost due to poor management and planning by military leaders, it is difficult for the public to blame those generals and bellicose politicians.  People without knowledge and freedom would rather fight and die with leaders who are promoting war with confidence or madness.  Some would rather join a post-surrender kamikaze attack with a general they have been taught to respect unconditionally in the society under control by the military.

The lesson must be that a nation must not have its supreme leader or a monarch who is a military man by his nature.

(But was Hitler a military man by his nature?)

Luckily, successive emperors of Japan, except those in ancient days, have not been warriors but rather cultural figures.  It was unthinkable even during WWII that the emperor would directly command the military and plan operations.  The Emperor of Japan in WWII could not carry out a kamikaze attack, because without him, there was no reason for the imperial military to fight any foreign forces.

Incidentally, if the Emperor directly ordered Admiral Ugaki no to conduct a kamikaze attack, Ugaki would not commit a suicide attack with other soldiers.  But, it is apparent that the Emperor had no intention and ability to directly plan any military operations and command any imperial forces, though he was the supreme commander of the Imperial military according to the Imperial Constitution.

"no sign be given" - A Case of Soseki Natsume, Great Author of Japan

Just around Tokyo

A Case of Soseki Natsume, Great Author of Japan

The purpose of preaching by Christ Jesus is to invite the Kingdom of God.  But what is the Kingdom while Christ Jesus said that it would come as intangible?

Simply we may think that any community in this world includes evil men.  If the population of a community is ten, there would be surely nine bad men and three of them should be evil.

But in the Kingdom of God, if its population is ten, there would be no bad men and evil men among the ten; all the ten people should be good and righteous.  And, this must be the final target of mankind.  It is not to attain the highest status possible materially, scientifically, technologically, and economically what mankind should target.  To wipe out all the evil men from the world must be the ultimate end of mankind.

It is a process of purification of souls.  Every year a ratio of evil men to all the population of any human community must be decreased to reach zero eventually.  And then, we may say that the Kingdom of God has come.

There living was one very successful author in Japan 100 years ago.  Soseki Natume (1867-1916) is still today counted as one of the most popular and praised authors in the modern era of Japan.

Natsume had one close disciple, among a dozen or so who periodically gathered in his home for friendly talks about literature and so on, that often borrowed money from him.  This young disciple, named Hyakken Uchida (1889-1971), graduated from the Imperial University of Tokyo to be a German language teacher in schools of the Imperial Army and Navy and a certain private university.  Uchida, who admired Natsume since his collage days, even became himself a popular author in 1930s.  But, despite these social conditions, he was uniquely poor or needed money more than he earned.  So, he sometimes went to Natsume's house to borrow money, often a big amount of money.

As Natsume contracted with a major newspaper company to write novels for its readers, he was somewhat affluent.  But, he never rejected requests from Uchida for money, though there seems to have been no other close followers of Natsume who would ask him for money.

Once, Soseki Natsume was spending his holidays in a hot-spring hotel in Yugawara on the Pacific coast, 100 km west of Tokyo, since Natsume had a chronic gastric disorder.  But, one night suddenly Uchida came to the hotel to borrow money without prior notice.  Though railroad services were available from Tokyo to Yugawara even 100 years ago, Uchida had to make hard travelling as he had almost no money but a train ticket.

When Uchida somehow arrived at the hotel at night, Natsume warmly accepted him.  Natsume arranged a room and a supper for Uchida at his expense.  And, after hearing a request for money, Natsume told Uchida to go back to Natsume's house in Tokyo and receive the money from Natsume's wife next day, though he would continue to stay in the hotel.  In this way, Uchida borrowed money from great author Soseki Natsume so many times; however Uchida seems to have never returned money.

When Soseki Natsume died, Uchida went to the funeral service hall.  There were many notable authors and parties concerned in the ceremony.  But when Uchida was entering the hall, he saw a strange gentleman, though looking neat and tidy or even dignified, uttering strange words outside the entrance to the hall like a mad man.  He sometimes expressed words such as those of Soseki Natsume.  And before the mad man, a strange dog was hotly barking at him.  Nobody else seemed to mind the mad man and the dog.  Maybe only Uchida could see them.

I think that the mad man was the soul of Soseki Natsume and the dog was Satan.  It proves that Natsume wrote some great novels against the evil spirit of Satan.  Natsume gave money so many times unconditionally to young, poor, and strange followers such as Uchida, which must be an act that Satan most dislikes.

Like in Nastume's case, the Kingdom of God can be realized by giving one's money generously to the needy.

"with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob" - What Newton Said about Truth

Government Office District, Tokyo

What Newton Said about Truth

Issac Newton (1642-1727) wrote: It is not a location but a state that is important.

Newton studied orbits and movements of celestial objects.  He then found those objects followed some laws.  He further found these laws could be expressed in simple equations mathematically.  It was as if they had been controlled by God but not randomly behaving like stupid men.

No matter wherever you may go, if a state in your mind did not change, it must be useless from a viewpoint of human value.  The main part is the state of your mind and the subject part is the location.  Accordingly, Newton never traveled far from the zone between the University of Cambridge and London.  But the state of his mind dynamically changed as his mind traveled across the solar system.

Newton also wrote: In a small area under our feet, there are a great number of living things; therefore in the great space above our heads, there must be a great number of spiritual entities looking down on us.

No matter how much successful you are, you are just small kings in small domains.  If you conquered the whole world, your empires would last only for a few years, days, or hours.  If your kingdom continued for 2000 years, your family would be able to occupy only a small area on the earth.  Your pride should be shattered when some superior existence shows you truth of the universe and history.

But how can we access truth so that we don't look like a fool with only $1 trillion before God who created all the gold and silver in this universe?   Newton indicated that the keys are the state of our mind and our humility before God.

No matter how stupid and lazy you are, you can travel the world.  You don't have to make any efforts and take any responsibility when you are sigh-seeing the world.  You just enjoy interesting scenery and landscapes, while enriching your knowledge about the world without any pains.  Then when you return to your home town, you can proudly tell others what you have experienced in the world.  You may even feel like a hero.  What a smart man you are to travel the world!

But truth is that you lack some knowledge and experiences about your hometown which you must have fully comprehended if you staid in your hometown without travelling.  And among what you lose, there might be some crucial elements needed to understand the world.  To understand the world, you need a steady base.  And, your hometown can be a better base than any other locations you travel to.

Accordingly, the more you travel, the less you understand the world at deeper levels.  Meaning of information and experiences can be only deepened if you take necessary time to analyze and reflect them.  But when you are absent in your hometown, you cannot have such enough time for understanding your hometown, the place from which or through which you can best understand the truth of the world.

If you understand 10% of Tokyo, 10% of New York, and 10% of London, your understanding of your hometown will be 70%.  You cannot even win somebody in your hometown who understands 100% of your hometown.  Accordingly, you have to belong to a community, where your experience of 10% for each major city works well.  It is the global economy and the money market.  But, you will be lost in your hometown that is your home where you can protect your soul and humanity.

In other word, rich people traveling the world so busily are dangerous people.  They have already lost their spiritual hometowns.  They would sell even their countries as well as their consciences for meager additional wealth or entertainment.  They despise what is called love, ethics, fairness, or friendship.  They are servants of Satan.

In addition, Shakespeare did not travel much, either.  What he tried to secure finally in his life is his tomb as he engraved the following word on his tomb stone:
Good frend for Iesvs sake forbeare,
To digg the dvst encloased heare.
Bleste be man spares thes stones,
And cvrst be he moves my bones.
(Modern spelling: Good friend, for Jesus' sake forbear, / To dig the dust enclosed here. / Blessed be the man that spares these stones, / And cursed be he that moves my bones.)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Shakespeare#Later_years_and_death

Truly, if people should stop travelling all over the world or from London to New York and from New York to Tokyo, the global warming can be alleviated.  Energy consumed accompanying peoples' travelling all over the world is enormous.  Goods and services used for such travelling need also a huge amount of energy in their production and provision.  If 1.3 billion Chinese should start to travel like rich Americans and Europeans, energy needed and consumed for their terrible travelling would quickly invite the Jurassic period again.

And no matter how rich you may be, you cannot be another Newton or another Shakespeare.  You will be at most just another Judas Iscariot who earned 30 or so silver coins by betraying Christ Jesus.

You must fix the origin in any observation of phenomena.  To establish an effective origin, you have to put in, at least, a necessary and minimum required time as our brain and mind are so designed by God.
