MISTRESS, LAWMAKERS, PRESIDENTS, AND COURT

(Japan at Red Sunset)

MISTRESS, LAWMAKERS, PRESIDENTS, AND COURT

In the late-night TV news program in Japan, they briefly reported on the official visit of the Crown Prince of Japan to Spain.

Nonetheless, "His wife, Crown Princess Masako, is not accompanying him on the trip, which ends July 22."

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080717/wl_asia_afp/spainjapanroyals

Yet, respectfully, you must not associate the Japan’s case with the British one.

SECTION 1: QUALITY OF JAPANESE POLITICIANS

1-1. Mr. Hisayasu Nagata

It is a little surprise that English Wikipedia has an entry for Mr. Hisayasu Nagata, a former Japanese national lawmaker who resigned a few years ago taking responsibility for falsely or mistakenly accusing one of prominent politicians highly associated with the then Prime Minister Mr. Jyunichiro Koizumi of having accepted unethical funds, though indirectly, from the notorious Livedoor corporation.

The accusation Mr. Nagata made against the politician of the Liberal Democratic Party was soon found to be groundless, since he solely relied on an e-mail as a proof of the unethical funding which disappointingly turned out to be a very sad fake.

Mr. Nagata graduated from University of Tokyo, the so-called top university in Japan, and was employed by the Finance Ministry, the so-called top ministry in Japan, in 1993 as an elite official; he then ran for a national election successfully in 2000.

Despite his talent and ability in academic performance in school, he could not prove his common sense and ordinary morals of life in his career at the national legislative assembly of Japan (called the Diet).

His acting the fool on a big stage, being televised nationwide from the Diet, really harmed the reputation of the Democratic Party of Japan he belonged to, as I wrote in EEE Reporter when this incident happened.

This incident actually led to a regime change in the largest opposition party in Japan, forcing the then young and nationalistic head of the Party to resign, which however widened a chance for the Party to win in the subsequent national election held in the last summer. Consequently, the Democratic Party of Japan now enjoys a majority in the Upper House of the Diet.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hisayasu_Nagata

1-2. Ms. Satsuki Katayama

It is a matter of course that English Wikipedia has an entry for Ms. Satsuki Katayama, one of prominent national lawmakers of Japan.

She graduated from University of Tokyo, the so-called top university in Japan, and was employed by the Finance Ministry, the so-called top ministry in Japan, in 1982 as an elite official.

Though an amount of descriptions about Ms. Satsuki Katayama in Wikipedia is less than those about Mr. Nagata and their careers look alike somehow, the past performance of Ms. Satsuki Katayama as an elite bureaucrat far surpasses that of Mr. Nagata. In short, Ms. Satsuki Katayama was two or three ranks above Mr. Nagata in the Finance Ministry, though she entered the political arena only in 2005 as the then Prime Minister Mr. Jyunichiro Koizumi strongly asked her to run for the General Election.

Since she was elected as a national lawmaker, she made many appearances on TV and other media to be one of the most popular female politicians in Japan.

Nonetheless she has recently faced a test of her common sense and ordinary morals of life.

It is because some female voters in her constituency were under a strong influence of a certain person very unfriendly to her.

Ms. Satsuki Katayama claimed that she found that the very person was a mistress or a concubine of a deceased, former national lawmaker in an adjacent constituency whose son succeeded him as a national lawmaker of the same Liberal Democratic Party.

So, a persistent battle erupted between Ms. Satsuki Katayama and the alleged mistress, since the son of the deceased, former national lawmaker had allowed the mistress to officially refer to herself using the surname of his family.

The issue is, of course, whether the personal information about the alleged mistress Ms. Satsuki Katayama obtained was true and correct.

Ms. Satsuki Katayama crucially relied on the information in her fight against the female old dominant figure in a local city, in order to gain control of political activities of female voters in her own constituency including part of the local city.

But, one thing true is that a mistress of a politician should not have a political influence on voters in any countries in any time, since a politician has a duty to make a law which must protect a right of a wife against a mistress.

SECTION 2: QUALITY OF US PRESIDENTS

From some examples of Japanese politicians, it is apparent that quality of politicians can be measured by the handling of information, money, and a mistress.

Put candidly, if Mr. Bill Clinton had been excellent in the above-stated terms, his administration could have effectively taken measures against AlQaeda so as to prevent the 9/11 Terror successfully.

Further, Mrs. Clinton could have been nominated as the official Democrat candidate for the 2008 Presidential Election.

Put candidly, too, if JFK and Lyndon Johnson had been excellent in the above-stated terms, their administrations could have effectively taken measures against Asian communists so as to prevent the Vietnam War successfully.

Conversely, as Mr. Jimmy Carter and Mr. Al Gore are probably excellent in the above-stated terms, they were awarded a Nobel Prize each, though their political influence in the U.S. does not look so dominant at all.

SECTION 3: QUALITY OF ROYAL FAMILIES

The death of Princess Diana tells everything about the quality of the British Royal family.

The quality of Imperial Family of Japan is of course on shoulders of His Imperial Highness the Crown Prince and Her Imperial Highness the Crown Princess.

And, no Japanese citizens today living under the Constitution influenced by Christianity, though covertly, would accept a case similar to the one involving Princess Diana who suffered from existence of a mistress of her husband, a son of Queen Elizabeth.

***********************************************************************

That is all for today.

Check existence of a mistress before you vote for any US Presidential candidate.

And, you also know why democracy must prevail in the Middle East, not only because many terrorists were from Saudi Arabia in September 2001.

WHO WOULD RATHER TALK ABOUT WWIII?

(Remembering the winter as so hot in Japan now)

WHO WOULD RATHER TALK ABOUT WWIII?

It will not be "Change" but the "Third World War (WWIII)" that must be an issue in the 2012 US Presidential Election, though, Your Royal Highness.

Q: Will the world suffer the Third World War?

A: According to the Gospel, the world will probably suffer it.

Q: What will be the state of WWIII, specifically? An all-out thermonuclear war?

A: According to the Gospel, probably not. Jesus Christ said not to go back to your house so as to retrieve anything left while fleeing.

Q: Are there any signs now for WWIII?

A: One crucial indication is that the UN Security Council has refused to admit Japan as a new permanent member, while Japan is the only major nation that has a pacifist constitution. The U.S., China, Russia, the U.K., and France are regarded as having admitted the Angel of War in lieu of Japan.

Q: Then again, what will be the state of WWIII, specifically?

A: It would probably start with a financial war, an energy-resources war, a foods war, a territorial war, and a war on terror in addition to a war around CO2.

Today’s minor wars on financial interests, energy resources, foods, territories, and terror (and invisibly around CO2) can develop and all converge into one chaotic global war.

If millions of Africans are neglected to death, millions of Muslims are neglected to death, millions of South Asians are neglected to death, millions of local Chinese are neglected to death, and millions of African Americans, Hispanics, Caribbeans, and Latin Americans are neglected to death all simply because they are too poor without any commercial value, we had better refer to it as WWIII rather than development and deployment of “global economy” based on the mesmerizing principle called “free market economics.”

Q: But nobody is talking about WWIII. Nobody thinks that WWIII will be set off.

A: That is it. That is the very situation where an unthinkable tragedy can happen in a large scale. Jesus Christ indeed said that a great tragedy could happen when nobody dreamed it.

Look at the figures of money the U.S. has been spending for its military build-up and military operations in these years.

Look at the figures of money China and Russia have been spending for its military build-up and military operations in these years.

Look at the figures of money Judaists and Muslims can raise for overt and covert military operations and acts of terror.

Look at the figures of electric power generated globally, cars being produced and driven globally, and demands for energy sources, and on the other hand the figures of remaining oil reserves and the rise of temperature as well as crazy figures all related to CO2.

Put simply, while the nature of the earth is being so much damaged by material desire of mankind, mankind is only preparing advanced technologies for military and finance purposes to apply to makeshift solutions.

The fundamentals are more leaning to WWIII than to Global Prosperity, since you cannot make the whole world like China, an autocratic state making many citizens richer but more citizens poorer and desperate without a means to change the regime due to harsh military government.

Q: How will WWIII proceed and end?

A: When everybody wishes and prays for the advent or the second coming of Jesus the Savior, WWIII will end.

Then after, I hope that mankind will live humbly forever without consuming much energy in a manner raising the global temperature dangerously without being fooled by CO2 any more.

Q: So, will it be a happy ending?

A: Until the last issue of good and evil is finally solved, we cannot assume that mankind has entered the last phase of its existence.

Does the God expect mankind to become all good by defeating all evil?

What is this game mankind has been thrown into?

The last thing to be solved is this good and evil issue. At least, there cannot be a happy ending if mankind lives materially and emotionally happily under the reign of evil.

(Q: Will WWIII be called Armageddon, sir?
A: You have said so, my darling princess.)

********************************************************************

Indeed, those who questioned Jesus Christ looked all so foolish.

Truly we have eyes to see and ears to hear, in addition to a mouth to pray to and praise God.

[Shall I then survive it, my Lord Christ?]

ANCIENT CHINESE PHILOSOPHY: "WASH"

(Tokyo Railroads)

ANCIENT CHINESE PHILOSOPHY - The River's Request "Wash" -

Last night, a late-night TV news program in Japan picked up that cover page of The New Yorker, presenting the Obamas as the enemy of America in the Middle East fashion, since the online site of The New Yorker still puts it on the upper right corner of the screen.

http://www.newyorker.com/

Indeed, the emergence of Mr. Barack Obama on the stage of the general election for US Presidency is a big event since the Civil War from a racial point of view.

But, from outside the U.S., it also looks like indicating that the European-American racial group cannot offer any candidates from their group who can handle the present national problems and international issues as US President. In short, European-Americans must have difficulty in finding suitable personnel, which resembles the last days of the Roman Empire, in my humble view.

It is well known that the Roman Empire was full of Germanic soldiers and officers in its military in its final days.

* * *

Why was he named “Arou,” the notable Japanese translator of the French novel “The Little Prince?”

Arou Naito (1883 – 1977) had the father who, when he was young, namely 140 years ago, followed the then most prestigious samurai scholar of the Chinese classics Shonan Yokoi. So, it is natural that the father named his son based on his knowledge about the Chinese classics.

The name “Arou” is actually from an expression used in an ancient Chinese book called "Mencius."

(However, Mencius is also a name of a notable disciple of Confucius living around 350 B.C.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mencius )

In the book Mencius (called “Mou-shi” in Japanese), there is a story that tells an origin of the name “Arou.”

One day when Confucius (551 B.C. – 479 B.C.) and his disciples were walking along a river, they heard little children singing, "Let’s wash our feet when the river is full of murky waters! Let’s wash the string of a crown when the river is full of clean and clear water!"

The great ancient scholar Confucius said to his disciples, "It is the river itself that is requesting the feet or the string of a crown to be washed, according to its own will."

This short story was interpreted as teaching a need to live a life in accordance with state of the society. Live actively when the world is full of goodness; but retreat from the front line when the public mind is full of vice.

The moral lesson derived from this story is simply expressed in four Kanji letters: "Taku-ei Taku-soku" where "Taku" means “wash” ("Ei" meaning a string; "Soku" a foot).

The Japanese word "Arou" is a literary expression of “Arau” meaning "wash."

* * *

This concept is part of the philosophy of ancient China, since its origin is linked with saint Confucius.

However more deeply we should ponder over the teaching of Confucius.

As he found truth in Children’s singing, it really matches the teaching of Jesus Christ: the holy meaning of things and events was hidden from smart adults but revealed to children.

All the words of Confucius can be interpreted as teaching excellent art of living well; but they do not stop there.

A fake saint whose largest desire is worldly success, even in the religious business, cannot spontaneously say, "It is the river itself that is requesting the feet or a crown to be washed, according to its own will," when he heard children singing, "Let’s wash our feet when the river is full of murky waters! Let’s wash the string of a crown when the river is full of clean and clear water!"

For example, you can regard a river as history and a foot or a crown as a greedy politician or a hero.

* * *

If history is God Himself, it truly can request a foot or a crown, namely a greedy politician or a hero for reasons mankind cannot fully comprehend.

From this point of view, you can understand why this era needs Mr. Barack Hussein Obama as a major candidate for the 2008 US Presidential Election.

Indeed, this era needs an African-American Presidential candidate after the era of Mr. George W. Bush who is a European American born rich and predisposed by his non-academic nature.

Yet, once the era needed Mr. George W. Bush after the era of Mr. Bill Clinton who was born commonly or mysteriously but cultivated his forward-looking personality to be elected as President together with academically intellectual Mr. Al Gore as Vice President.

Similarly, once the era needed Mr. Bill Clinton after the era of Mr. George H. W. Bush who was born rich and built his career through the oil business, US Congress, CIA, and the Vice President office as one of power elites through the Vietnam War and the Cold War.

Similarly, once the era needed Mr. George H. W. Bush after the era of Ronald Reagan who was born commonly but cultivated his lucky-bastard personality in the show business and a political community in California aiming at a shining house on a hill after the too confusing and somber eras of Richard Nixon and Mr. Jimmy Carter.

* * *

But, this era has been so much contaminated by money or precisely big money.

The US subprime loan problem is really laughing at the so-called material American Dream.

This era requests a change in the paradigm related to the American Dream. It must be spiritual rather than material.

US democracy should be respected from a spiritual point of view but not from a material point of view.

The violent torrent of huge money driven by material desire of 300 million US citizens must be controlled, regulated, and suppressed, since 100 million US consumers can default on $300,000 each, thus accumulating $30 trillion debts in total in theory.

However, this is beyond and over a financial scale that the U.S. Government or the US President alone can sufficiently or effectively handle to save the global economy.

The history or this era, or otherwise the river must request now politicians or heroes like The Little Prince, since Le Petit Prince respects truth and value so intangible or hidden from the eye of greedy politicians and smart power elites.

So, please refer to a timely piece of ABC news: "Hundreds of Super Rich Under Investigation"

---------------------
Hundreds of rich Americans whose names and secret foreign bank account information were turned over to US tax authorities could face criminal prosecution. A Senate committee is scheduled to convene tomorrow and among those called to testify are foreign bank account holders, including one of the wealthiest men in Los Angeles.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac Taking on the President

(Downtown Tokyo)

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac Taking on the President

Last night, a late-night TV news program in Japan reported that higher gasoline prices are contributing to an increase in safety on roads and a decline in the number of American youths killed in a car accident nowadays.

Yet, the higher gasoline prices can be explained with the billiard table theory: The subprime loan problem has led to the surge of oil prices in the commodity market.

It is because those who have lost big money in the housing loan sector are trying to compensate for their loss by increasing the oil price and thus multiplying their credit capability.

But, more importantly, US President Mr. George W. Bush very recently, namely after the G8 Meeting, looked like first discovering the core of the problem with a surprise: Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac.

So, let’s check the situation.

SECTION I: SHARES OF FANNIE MAE/FREDDIE MAC

The following is a graph indicating a trend of a total share of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in the total US housing loan business.

Their total share is above 40%, meaning that their collapse in business would trigger the Great Depression in the US Economy.

So, we have to check on why nobody has ever given any advice to the US President that at the core of the problem are Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

SECTION II: JUNE 2002

In 2002, some US experts calculating the scale of the possible financial crisis to reach $10 trillion pointed at "foolish statements" by Mr. Alan Greenspan.

---------------------------------------------------
This article appears in the June 21, 2002 issue of Executive Intelligence Review.
'Fannie and Freddie Were Lenders':
U.S. Real Estate Bubble Nears Its End
by Richard Freeman

In testimony on April 17, before Congress' Joint Economic Committee, Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan foolishly denied that there is a housing bubble, and asserted that housing conditions are "scarcely tinder for a speculative conflagration." Greenspan's statements fall under the heading of "he doth protest too much”…

On May 28, the 2004 Presidential pre-candidate Lyndon LaRouche told an international webcast audience: "We are sitting on top of a real-estate bubble collapse in the United States today; the Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac bubble is about to blow. What day it's going to blow, I don't know. But it's going to blow.…

Thus, the total of housing-related high-risk obligations is roughly $5 trillion.

It should be kept in mind that if one starts with $5.757 trillion in mortgages, these $5.0 trillion in risky obligations are distinct from and in addition to the mortgages, and a total of $10.757 trillion is laden onto the homes and attached to the incomes of America's homeowners. A Mortgage-Backed Security is an instrument with its own risks, independent of those of the underlying mortgages. For example, a dramatic change in interest rates or even a significant increase in pre-payments of mortgages can wipe out MBS value, quite as efficiently as the increase in mortgage defaults.

Signs now exist of an increase in mortgage problems: In the first quarter of 2002, more than 4.65% of mortgage loans nationwide were delinquent (30 days past due), the highest level in ten years, and the rate of mortgage defaults is rising. Fannie Mae has taken extraordinary measures to roll over troubled homeowners' mortgages, in order not to have the level of defaults show up. But the housing bubble cannot be sustained.…

http://www.larouchepub.com/other/2002/2924fannie_mae.html

---------------------------------------------------

In 2002, some experts were expecting that the housing loan bubble will sooner or later burst despite Fannie Mae’s absurd strategy to hide defaults.

SECTION III: AUGUST 2007

A year ago, at least some advice looked like being delivered to the US President.

--------------------------------------------------
Bush against lifting Fannie, Freddie mortgage cap
Says reform of government-sponsored mortgage buyers needs to come first
By Robert Schroeder, MarketWatch
Last update: 4:05 p.m. EDT Aug. 9, 2007

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- President Bush said Thursday that he's against letting Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac buy more home loans in an effort to prop up the sagging mortgage market, commenting that he prefers to reform the two entities first.

It's "first things first" when it comes to Fannie and Freddie, Bush told reporters at a news conference. The two companies have been riven by accounting scandals…

Fannie Mae was fined $400 million in May 2006 after regulators found that senior executives manipulated books to reap bonuses for themselves. In 2003, Freddie Mac said that it misstated earnings by $5 billion for the years 2000 to 2002. The McLean, Va.-based company paid a fine of $125 million.

On Thursday, Bush said that both enterprises need to be reformed and "streamlined" before they're allowed to buy more loans.…

http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/bush-against-more-mortgages-fannie/story.aspx?guid={550D5AFD-3900-411A-8EA4-8CD2E28AD678}
--------------------------------------------------

If President Mr. Bush had continued to keep an eye on these two key players in today’s financial crisis, the situation should have been contained more effectively.

But, it is in 2003 that experts like Mr. Greenspan should have been more alerted, since "In 2003, Freddie Mac said that it misstated earnings by $5 billion for the years 2000 to 2002.”

SECTION IV: JULY 11, 2008

Before US President Mr. Bush made an urgent announcement early this week, some media already started to discuss how to bail out Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

------------------------------------------------
The Fannie and Freddie doomsday scenario
It's time to wonder what would happen if Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac failed.
By Katie Benner, writer-reporter
Last Updated: July 11, 2008: 3:03 PM EDT

NEW YORK (Fortune) -- Here's a scary, and relevant, question to ponder as the housing market continues to slide: What would it take for the government to step in and help Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and how would a rescue affect you, the taxpayer?...

The bailout scenarios
So what might it look like if the government had to lend a hand? Outright nationalization is an unlikely option given that neither the current administration nor the presidential candidates could afford to support such a move in an election year.

More likely, the Treasury Department or the Federal Reserve would come in and provide a liquidity backstop, in the form of a loan or guarantee to bondholders that they will be paid. Fannie and Freddie could even do a preferred stock deal with the government, much like the deal forged by Citigroup with the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, says Egan…

"But [a rescue] would be a political situation, so it would be messy," says Mason. "Fannie and Freddie would fight against having officers replaced. They would want to keep the dividend."

The doomsday scenario could cost taxpayers more than $1 trillion, says the S&P report. The report went so far as to say that a government bailout of Fannie or Freddie could force the agency to lower its rating on the creditworthiness of the United States

http://money.cnn.com/2008/07/09/news/companies/benner_fanniefreddie.fortune/index.htm?postversion=2008071013

-----------------------------------------------------------------

This expected burden of $1 trillion on taxpayers must have been a key to gaining an insight into the subsequent announcement by the US Treasury Secretary and the President.

SECTION V: JULY 16, 2008

The announcement of the Bush Administration’s plan issued early this week to rescue Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac has been amid criticism.

----------------------------------------------------
Opposition, From Both Parties, Over Bailout Plan
By STEPHEN LABATON and DAVID M. HERSZENHORN
Published: July 16, 2008

WASHINGTON — The Bush administration’s plan to rescue the nation’s two largest mortgage finance companies ran into sharp criticism in Congress on Tuesday as some lawmakers questioned the open-ended request for money that could be used to help the companies…

After Mr. Paulson replied that he did not think any money would be needed, Mr. Bunning said, “That doesn’t answer my question. Where is the money going to come from?”
“From the government,” Mr. Paulson said.

“And who is the government?” Mr. Bunning asked.

“The taxpayer,” Mr. Paulson said.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/16/business/16fannie.html?pagewanted=2&_r=1&hp

----------------------------------------------------

But the fact is as follows:
- The amount ($1.6 trillion) of outstanding bond of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac has reached the level equal to one third of the amount ($4.7 trillion) of the US Treasury bonds outstanding.

- Top five holders of bonds of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are China, Japan, Cayman Islands, Luxemburg and Belgium, and institutional investors, accounting for more than $1.3 trillion.

*****************************************************

What should be noted is however that US President Mr. George W. Bush looks like not having been fully informed of the above facts on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac until very recently, though he made a special announcement, just a year ago, on the need to reform the two major players in the housing sector.

It is just like the case that the report on the possible terror scheme planned by AlQaeda was not fully taken care of by the White House in the summer of 2001.

Until the exposure of the subprime loan problem in late last year, economists in Japan always commented in the media that US economy was robust since the US housing sector was enjoying a steady growth.

But, too much is as bad as too little, isn’t it?

Antoine de Saint Exupéry and Arou Naito

(On the Edo-Gawa River, 10 miles to the Tokyo Bay)

Antoine de Saint Exupéry and Arou Naito

It might be a merit, if you can read works of Antoine de Saint Exupér in French.

I think that I once read some of them in the Japanese version when I was young.

I think that I felt that his work was poetry.

I think that I thought that a poet was a very minority in this world.

Since then I have rarely refereed to works of Antoine de Saint Exupér, since his works did not directly refer to Jesus Christ.

Yet, I have to refer to Antoine de Saint Exupér in this difficult time of late 2000’s.

* * *

Antoine de Saint Exupéry is said to have been shot down by a German fighter plane, while flying a US-made fighter plane for a reconnaissance flight on July 31, 1944.

----------
In 1998, a fisherman named Jean-Claude Bianco found a silver identity bracelet bearing the names of Saint Exupéry and his wife Consuelo[9] and his publishers, Reynal & Hitchcock and was hooked to a piece of fabric, presumably from his flight suit.

In 2000, a diver named Luc Vanrell found a P-38 Lightning crashed in the seabed off the coast of Marseille. The remains of the aircraft were recovered in October 2003.[9] On April 7, 2004, investigators from the French Underwater Archaeological Department confirmed that the plane was, indeed, Saint Exupéry's F-5B reconnaissance variant.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antoine_de_Saint_Exup%C3%A9ry
----------

Japanese author Mr. Naoki Kojima wrote some about Antoine de Saint Exupéry in his book, “Ittou-wo sageta Otoko-tachi (Men with a Light Inside),” on personalities of various Japanese, one of whom is a Japanese scholar of French literature who translated The Little Prince (Le Petit Prince) written by Saint-Exupéry into Japanese.

The author Mr. Naoki Kojima wrote some about his thought on Antoine de Saint Exupéry, since he is a big fan of Antoine de Saint Exupéry.

In short, the Japanese author found a new type of the beautiful in a life style and an underlying idea on adventure of the French author who was also a pilot.

If you love adventure, you can be a torero or a bullfighter. Or you may even like to test your spirit of adventure in gamble. However, there is no true beauty in these acts.

Yet, if you are engaged in a flying mission, say, to deliver mails for citizens or the military, your flying an old-model plane over a hostile territory through a bad weather can be a process for purification of a soul directed to the universal virtue of mankind.

It is a new type of the beautiful or the art that the Japanese author was so much impressed with as he found it in the flying practice of Antoine de Saint Exupéry.

It is indeed a type of beauty Europeans love as even German pilots of fighter planes during WWII wanted to avoid fighting and shooting the flying author Saint Exupéry if they had encountered with the French pilot in the air.

Put simply, it is an extension of the hunting culture to find the beautiful in dynamic movement combined with heroism and dedicated to a non-nonsense mission. Antoine de Saint Exupéry reached universal human love in this extension.

* * *

But, the more your heart comes to love the beautiful of the human nature, the more you will see an ugly side of the human nature in the material world.

Conversely, there is an ugly thing that can be only clearly conceived by those who love the beautiful of the human nature to the extent that one can appreciate a piece of work of Antoine de Saint Exupéry so as to translate it into Japanese by adopting the title “The Prince of a Star” for Le Petit Prince.

Arou Naito, a Japanese scholar of French literature who translated Le Petit Prince into Japanese in 1953, namely when he was 70 years old, must have been such a person who saw ugly things in Paris during his stay there in 1923 for an academic purpose.

It is because he wrote a letter to his wife in Japan soon after his arrival at Paris, namely 85 years ago, telling that Paris was a good place but it was full of prostitution.

Arou Naito wrote that he had been surprised to find many whores in Paris as well as many Japanese males fitting in the situation so shamelessly.

Actually, Arou Naito who came to Paris for study at the expense of the Empire of Japan wrote that he had been taken aback at finding many Japanese males whose traveling to, and staying in, Paris were also government-financed simply got associated with whores in Paris as if for granted, while their wives were defending their home in Japan.

The author of the Japanese book “Ittou-wo sageta Otoko-tachi (Men with a Light Inside)” Mr. Naoki Kojima wrote that this vicious habit of Japanese males in Paris had begun with ex-samurais dispatched by the Empire of Japan in the early Meiji era to Europe in order to absorb and learn advanced European culture.

Professors, scholars, officials, military officers, students, and businessmen from Japan all enjoyed a life in Paris with a whore with a few exceptions in those days.

It is unfortunately true that in a samurai code of moral conduct there was no stern prohibition on such behaviors, unlike a true Christian code of conduct. But, the situation in Paris, Arou Naito deplored, was far worse than in Japan in this context.

The author Mr. Naoki Kojima wrote that this vicious habit of Japanese males in Paris had been especially augmented by a bad example of Prince Saionji Kinmochi (1849 – 1940), a Japanese politician, statesman and twice Prime Minister of Japan.

* * *

Prince Saionji Kinmochi stayed in Paris from 1871 to 1880. It is reportedly said that he had been associated with many whores in Paris.

Yet, after coming back home, until his death before WWII, he enjoyed the most influential political power in the Empire of Japan.

He actually was the last Genro (the elder statesman) who had an official right and duty to recommend the Emperor a politician for the prime minister.

The fact that Prince Saionji Kinmochi continued to have such an influential power until immediately before WWII is very grave.

(After the end of WWII, the noble class was abolished in Japan following a request from the U.S., though, without objections from the Japanese people. Today, Japan has the Imperial Family, but no noble class and accordingly no Lords and Dukes.)

So, it is not simply because Prince Saionji was born in a noble family, since there were some democracy developing before WWII in the Empire of Japan, that Prince Saionji succeeded in the political sector, but his experiences of study and life in Paris and other European cities for so many years must have helped him build his career in the political circle in the Empire of Japan still under the influence of ex-samurais.

It is said that Prince Saionji had no lawful wives but had some lovers and children.

It is also said that just before WWII, namely before his death, he gravely wondered where the Imperial Military was driving the nation.

Arou Naito, who had an opposite life in Paris to the one Prince Saionji had had decades before, survived WWII and encountered Le Petit Prince to translate it into Japanese, though he was 70 years old then.

The translation and Japanese expressions Arou Naito presented have moved hearts and minds of many Japanese during hard times after WWII.

Yet, what I want to emphasize is that if Prince Saionji had been a man like Arou Naito, the Empire of Japan must have taken a different course before WWII so as to avoid the tragedy caused by US atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Any leaders in the world must be like Arou Naito, if not Antoine de Saint Exupéry.

They must be so, since we cannot commit the fate of the world in the 21st century to whores in Paris, New York and Washington D.C., and London as well as their clients.

Sakamoto Ryoma and "The Little Prince"

(The Edo-Gawa River, Tokyo)

Sakamoto Ryoma and "The Little Prince"

It was hot in the afternoon yesterday. I was reading some books in my room. Then I took an afternoon nap. When I woke up, it was dark. So, at speed, I wrote a post card to drop it into a mailbox by a post office, though I am not a politician preparing for an election.

Nonetheless, the books I was reading were not boring.

In fact one of the books contains various personality stories of notable Japanese and also nameless ones, including writers, scholars of literature, politicians, and samurais since the end of Edo Period under the last samurai regime 140 years ago.

For example, the author of the book, Mr. Naoki Kojima, depicted the meeting of Sakamoto Ryouma, the most notable revolutionary samurai during the civil war in Japan 140 years ago, with Yokoi Shonan, the most notable samurai scholar in the same period.

(for Sakamoto Ryoma:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sakamoto_Ryoma

For Yokoi Shonan:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yokoi_Shonan )

Any Japanese today knows the name Sakamoto Ryoma (Sakamoto as a family name). Through his efforts, two major samurai clans got into alliance so as to overthrow the Tokugawa Shogunate, the last samurai regime in the Japanese history who could not however sufficiently address the invasion by the Western powers into Japan in the late 19th century.

Most of knowledgeable Japanese also know the name Yokoi Shonan (Yokoi as a family name), since he was not only a Confucian scholar but also an excellent teacher. Many of his samurai students later assumed higher office of the Empire of Japan after the Meiji Restoration.

It should be noted that modernization and westernization of Japan that started 140 years ago were extensively driven and piloted by bureaucrats of the Empire of Japan who were actually ex-samurais taught by teachers and scholars, such as Yokoi Shonan, before the Meiji Restoration or in the end of the Edo Period.

The two heroes met for the first and probably last time when Sakomoto Ryoma visited a local territory of a certain clan, in the far north of Kyoto, to see or interrogate Yokoi Shonan who was staying there as a guest teacher.

The revolutionary samurai Sakomoto had heard that prominent and influential scholar Yokoi was teaching something against a political idea Sakamoto and his political group were then upholding in their underground movement to destroy the Tokugawa regime.

(The Tokugawa clan had already decided to open the door of Japan to the world; Sakamoto at that time however wanted to continue the closed door policy, though he later drastically switched his thought to the opposite.)

Sakamoto, as a master swordsman, was determined to kill Yokoi with a sword if Yokoi’s philosophy had been against the anti-Tokugawa movement. Their conversation inevitably got heated sometimes with angry shouts. At any moment, Sakamoto might have stood up and pulled out his sword.

But, one of disciples of Yokoi Shonan was silently listening to the two behind the sliding door in the adjoining room, holding a sword in the hand.

Yet, there was no sword battle, since Sakamoto Ryoma suddenly started to laugh loudly and Yokoi Shonan followed it.

However, several years later or just after contributing to the decisive alliance of anti-Tokugawa samurai clans, the samurai hero Ryoma Sakamoto was foully assassinated with swords in Kyoto by some secrete agents on the Tokugawa’s side.

Further several years later or a few years after the Meiji Restoration (or the fall of the Tokugawa Regime), Yokoi Shonan was also assassinated with swords in Kyoto by those who hated his philosophy and success in the new government.

These incidents told that Japan’s westernization and modernization had been driven through bloody strife among the samurai class which eventually changed its social status mostly to Western-style bureaucrats, school teachers, policemen, and military officers in the Meiji Government that outwardly took an absolute Imperial system based on ancient traditions.

But, the one whom the author Mr. Naoki Kojima paid specific and adoring attention to was the disciple of Yokoi Shonan, who had been hiding in the next room holding a sword to protect his teacher in case.

This samurai disciple could survive the civil war, full of assassinations, to become a medical doctor in the Meiji era.

His name was Taikichi Naito (Naito as a family name). He had three sons and one daughter. One of his sons, called Arou, became a scholar of French literature.

* * *

Arou Naito was sent to France to study French literature in Paris by the Japanese Government in 1923. A few years later, he returned to Japan and became a professor of a university.

He died in 1977 at the age of 94. But, he is today well known in Japan as the first Japanese translator of The Little Prince (Le Petit Prince) written by Saint-Exupéry.

The Little Prince "has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide, putting it at number 3 on the most printed books list, just behind the Bible and ‘Gone With the Wind’ by Margaret Mitchell…"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Little_Prince

But, it is truly surprising that Arou Naito was 70 years old when he translated the Little Prince into Japanese as the first in Japan, since a certain female Japanese writer who had found that the Little Prince of the English version was not a simple fairy tale asked the old scholar to translate it into Japanese from the original French text.

Anyway, his Japanese translation of the Little Prince (Le Petit Prince) received great recognition and popularity among Japanese adult readers who mostly had suffered the tragedy of WWII.

Today, almost all the Japanese know at least the title of the book the Little Prince (Le Petit Prince), though it is called “Hoshi-no Ouji-sama” in Japanese.

Yet, “Hoshi” means a star; so the Japanese title means “The Prince of a Star.”

If the original title had been literally translated into Japanese, the book might not have appealed to the general public so much.

(It would have been such as “Chiisana Ryoushu (A Little Lord),” for example.)

But, what I want to discuss is not the quality of the translation by Arou Naito who also wrote and edited many textbooks and dictionaries for Japanese learners of French.

I will discuss my point of interest tomorrow.

So far as today, you must realize that if Sakamoto Ryoma had not trusted Yokoi Shonan and actually tried to kill him, the father of Arou Naito should have fought Sakamoto with a sword to save the life of Yokoi, his venerable master.

Yet, the chance seems to be that Sakomoto would have killed Yokoi and his disciple, namely the father of Arou Naito, because Sakamoto Ryoma was a master swordsman.

Then, Arou Naito would not have been born; hence there would not have been such a boom of the Little Prince (Le Petit Prince) in Japan as was observed when its first translation version was published in 1953.

By not killing Yokoi Shonan in 1851, Sakmoto Ryoma not only allowed many talented samurais to have a chance to learn from the great scholar Yokoi Shonan and become able bureaucrats of the Empire of Japan, but also allowed the great French novel by Saint-Exupéry to be effectively introduced into Japan in troubled times after WWII.

That is a great lesson today; but I will discuss more on Arou Naito, a translator of “Le Petit Prince” and also a son of the father who had been once so close to the sword of Sakomoto Ryoma, the last samurai hero before the Meiji Restoration.

(As I once said, Paris made some Japanese more stupid and arrogant, so that I never personally go to Paris until the proud French capital regrets its status, though you may officially visit it like a samurai:
