"He that hath two coats" - No More Earthquakes and Tsunamis of 3/11

Tokyo

No More Earthquakes and Tsunamis of 3/11

Just five years ago, a great earthquake occurred in the North Pacific Ocean 100 km or so off the Tohoku coast lines of Japan, specifically a 800 km-long coastal area north of Tokyo.

The magnitude M9.0 earthquake triggered a great tsunami, around 3 PM on March 11, 2011, that devastated the coastal cities, towns and villages as well as the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.  About 18,000 Japanese were killed and hundreds of thousands of residents were forced to evacuate. Even today, tens of thousands of people are still living in temporary emergency residents.

2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami
The 2011 earthquake off the Pacific coast of Tōhoku  was a magnitude 9.0 (Mw) undersea megathrust earthquake off the coast of Japan that occurred at 14:46 JST (05:46 UTC) on Friday 11 March 2011,[2][3][8] with the epicentre approximately 70 kilometres (43 mi) east of the Oshika Peninsula of Tōhoku and the hypocenter at an underwater depth of approximately 30 km (19 mi).
The degree and extent of damage caused by the earthquake and resulting tsunami were enormous, with most of the damage being caused by the tsunami. Video footage of the towns that were worst affected shows little more than piles of rubble, with almost no parts of any structures left standing.[219] Estimates of the cost of the damage range well into the tens of billions of US dollars; before-and-after satellite photographs of devastated regions show immense damage to many regions.[220][221] Although Japan has invested the equivalent of billions of dollars on anti-tsunami seawalls which line at least 40% of its 34,751 km (21,593 mi) coastline and stand up to 12 m (39 ft) high, the tsunami simply washed over the top of some seawalls, collapsing some in the process.
Japan's National Police Agency said on 3 April 2011, that 45,700 buildings were destroyed and 144,300 were damaged by the quake and tsunami. The damaged buildings included 29,500 structures in Miyagi Prefecture, 12,500 in Iwate Prefecture and 2,400 in Fukushima Prefecture.[223] Three hundred hospitals with 20 beds or more in Tōhoku were damaged by the disaster, with 11 being completely destroyed.[224] The earthquake and tsunami created an estimated 24–25 million tons of rubble and debris in Japan.[225][226]
An estimated 230,000 automobiles and trucks were damaged or destroyed in the disaster. As of the end of May 2011, residents of Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima prefectures had requested deregistration of 15,000 vehicles, meaning that the owners of those vehicles were writing them off as unrepairable or unsalvageable.

Since the end of WWII, Japan has not been engaged in any wars unlike the US, China, the UK, France, Russia, etc.  It has never lost 18,000 or so human lives in a one-day incident, though the 1995 Hanshin-Kobe Earthquake took 6,000 lives.  This is the largest incident after WWII for Japan.

What surprised the Japanese people in the wake of this great natural disaster, there was a historical record about a similar earthquake and tsunami of the similar scale.  According to a history book written under authority of the imperial court in Kyoto in 901, the Pacific cost of the Tohoku region, namely almost the same area that suffered the 2011 Earthquake/Tsunami, was hit by a great earthquake and a subsequent tsunami in 869.  Boring surveys conducted in the area after the 2011 natural disaster proved that it was a fact.  So, the media started to call it a "disaster that could happen once in 1000 years."  So, some people claimed: who could predict it?  Or, as it seems to have a 1000 year cycle in occurrence, should the Japanese people have prepared for it as it could happen at any time since more than 1100 years had passed already?.

As for Fukushima Prefecture where the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant is situated, total about 1800 people were killed directly by the earthquake/tsunami among 2 million population.  However the number of the deaths due to causes related to  the earthquake/tsunami and the subsequent nuclear accident is more than 2000.  They include old patients who were hospitalized in hospitals near the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant but could not evacuate in a safe and careful manner. They also include ole people who died in poor environment of temporary homes or under heavy stress caused by the disaster. What is worse, the number of yearly suicide cases in Fukushima Prefecture has doubled after the 2011 disaster in comparison with data before (namely 10 to more than 20).

There are still about 80,000 evacuees in Fukushima Prefecture due to the nuclear accident.  To compensate for their damage, pains and inconvenience, Tokyo Electric Power Co., the owner of the nuclear power plant, is paying monthly 100,000 yen (about $900) for every evacuee, including babies.  The utility is said to have already paid compensations of 1 trillion 800 billion yen (about $17 billion).

"the axe is laid unto the root of the trees" - Imperial Family of Japan and the Japanese Myth

Around Tokyo

Imperial Family of Japan and the Japanese Myth

No European kings and queens claim that their ancestors were gods, but the imperial court of Japan officially asserted that the emperor was a descendant of gods in the official history book formulated in the early 8th century or specifically in 720.  And this official history book, which actually contains myths and facts, has never been denied to date, though the Japanese Constitution and laws and regulations of today do not admit or accept the authority of the emperor based on the book, titled Nihon-shoki (the Record Book of Japan).

According to Nihon-shoki, the first emperor, called Jin-mu (meaning god's military force), was born as a son of a god called Hiko-nagisatake-ugaya-hukiaezu, in a region called Hyuga, presently Miyazaki Prefecture in Kyusyu.  The first god who descended from the heaven to Hyuga was called Ninigi.  Ninigi was a grandson of goddes Ama-terasu-omikami who was a daughter of Izanagi.  Izanagi was one of the seven gods who were born at the time of the creation of the world.  Among them, Ama-terasu-omikami was regarded as the direct ancestor of the imperial family that was started by Emperor Jin-mu.  Today, Ama-terasu-omikami is enshrined in the Ise Shrine in Mie Prefecture.  Even today, every Japanese prime minister goes to the Ise Shrine to pay respect to goddes Ama-terasu-omikami in the first week in January.

And the current emperor is the 125th emperor, meaning the 124th emperor after the first emperor Jin-mu who was a descendant of goddess Ama-terasu-omikami (meaning a great goddess shining in the sky).  According to the history book Nihon-shoki, Jin-mu reigned Japan from January 1, BC 660, for 77 years.  The Japanese imperial calendar specifies BC 660 as the first year in the Japanese history, though this calendar is only used in shinto shrines.

In China where different powerful families sometimes launched revolution to defeat incumbent imperial families to establish new dynasties, whenever a new dynasty was established they started to write and compile a new history book to justify their act of taking over power.  But in Japan, only one family has ever occupied the imperial court or the dynasty of Japan.  Therefore, Nihon-shoki is the only history book written and compiled by dynasties of Japan that have been actually only one.

If any powerful clan had tried to replace the imperial family of Japan in the past, they should have had to create a new myth of Japan with new gods and goddesses.  It must have been a very difficult task, since Nihon-shoki consists of 30 volumes.  And for example, the first volume, which describes an era of gods and goddesses, consists of 13,500 kanji letters.  To create a new history book of Japan to justify their authority, a new ruler of Japan should have written a longer and richer history than Nihon-shoki.  It is almost impossible.  Accordingly, though the imperial family and the emperor lost political power before the 10th century, no ruling noble families or samurai clans in later eras tried to abolish the incumbent imperial family and establish a new dynasty.

So, very nominally the imperial family of Japan is a descendant of gods and goddesses even today.

However, Nihon-shoki was written in classic Chinese.  It was not written in the Japanese language.  Nihon-shoki consists of classic Chinese sentences.  Therefore, the letters used in the history book are all kanji (Chinese) characters.  (Though Japanese sentences came to be written with kanji and kana characters, till kana characters were invented based on kanji in the 9th century, Japanese sentences were also written with only kanji characters.)  Nihon-shoki was formulated for the purpose of showing it to the Chinese imperial court.  It was intended to show to Chinese that the Japanese imperial court was cultivated as much as China, the overwhelmingly most advanced country in East Asia at the time.  It is as if a small country wrote its constitution in English to show the US that the country is cultivated as much as the US.

However, in the 8th century, as China was so dominant in East Asia, most of other countries became tributary nations of China.  But Japan declared in the 8th century that it was not subject to China, since the Japanese imperial court could write its history in decent Chinese like the Chinese imperial court. Indeed, even Romans used ancient Greeks to show how much they were cultivated.

This is a key to understanding the Japanese culture and tradition as well as its history.  And that is why the imperial family of Japan has survived for 1700 years, as proven by some historical facts.  (A classic Chinese history book made description about a state of Japan of around AD 1, which is the earliest written record about Japan.)

Put simply, the imperial family of Japan has its own myth that is also a myth of Japan.

"The wind bloweth where it listeth" - Consumption or Desire-Based Economy, So Evil

Around Tokyo

Consumption or Desire-Based Economy, So Evil

If no body wants cars, car makers in the world would go bankrupt.  If no body wants cell phones, cell phone makers in the world go bankrupt.

If everybody uses his car for 10 years, most of car makers would go bankrupt.  If no body uses his cell phone more than 3 minutes a day, most of cell phone makers would go bankrupt.

For businesses to earn big profits, they launch new products or models every year.  They have to make consumers buy new  products or models, so that these businesses cannot prosper.

New products or models meet reasonable needs of consumers, but 99% of their sales are from consumers who buy them to satisfy their desire.

To increase sales and thereby profits, businesses have to make consumers have desire of possessing new products or models in addition to meeting their needs and providing more convenience in their lives.  Mere consumption for necessity and convenience cannot promise big sales.  But desire-driven consumption translates into big sales and thus big profits for businesses.

But from the beginning, businesses can only exist and continue their operation as consumers buy their products or services.  They have to appeal to needs, convenience, or desire of consumers so that they will buy their products or services.  Selling their products or services is given the highest priority.  But what types of consumers would buy their goods or services more?

The consumers buy as they think goods or services businesses provide meet their need, make their lives more convenient, and satisfy their desire.  And it is apparent that pious, righteous, humble, and thoughtful consumers would not buy much, while materialistic, irresponsible, arrogant, and frivolous consumers would buy much.

Indeed, we are surrounded by too many goods and services we can do without.  But we know as we buy and consume them, business can continue their business and operation.  Accordingly, consumers can work in those businesses and earn salary to buy goods and services.  This is our economy and today's global economy.

But there are no laws, regulations, or official rules that order to buy and consume goods and services so that this economy works well.  No nation or society has such laws, regulations, or official rules.  Is it because people buy and consume goods and services like gods to support businesses and their living?  And, gods do not need laws, regulations, or official rules?

Then, the core of the market economy is this consumption and procurement of goods and services by consumers who are acting like gods to maintain this chain of money flow.

However, financial goods pose a different problem.  It is purely desire-appealing products.  Financial companies do not employ many consumers in comparison with other businesses in other industrial sectors.  And financial companies mostly serve wealthy people.  They are not so closely related to consumers' needs, convenience, and employment.

So, consumer-based economy regrading desire as one factor of it inevitably leads to establishment of the financial or money industry where desire is almost the only factor.

Without the financial or money industry, the gap between the rich and the poor does not expand so desperately.  And as you know, this gap symbolizes every evil in the society.

To conquer evil in the society, we have to conquer the gap between the rich and the poor.  To conquer the gap between the rich and the poor, we have to conquer the financial or money industry.  To conquer the financial or money industry, we have to conquer the market economy.  To conquer the market economy, we have to conquer the consumer-based economy.  It is so because businesses make consumers have more desire so that they buy more.  And, human desire is a means for Satan to make his slaves out of human beings.

Consumers are buying and consuming goods and services like gods to satisfy ultimately their desire by leveraging power of money.  But such consumption is an easy and wide road to the hell.

We have to stop this consumption or desire-based economy.  As long as we continue to consume goods or services like gods, no evil in society can be conquered and no social problems can be totally solved.

"O generation of vipers" - A Case that Government Ignores Victims

Around Tokyo

A Case that Government Ignores Victims

Megumi Yokota was taken away from a seaside town on the Sea of Japan at one evening in 1977 when she was coming back home from a junior high school.  She was 13 years old at the time.  North Korea agents seems to have encountered her by chance and taken her to a spy ship that secretly sailed across the Sea of Japan to North Korea.

For 20 years, the truth of the incident, namely abduction by North Korean agents, was not revealed to the Yokota family.

It happened to be revealed in 1996 by a Japanese journalist who had interviewed some officials of the South Korean Government for a different issue.  The South Korean officials got information about Megumi Yokota from a certain North Korean defector.  But it was in 1997 that the parents of Megumi were notified of the fact that their daughter had been kidnapped by North Korean secret agents.  They were informed by a secretary of a parliamentary member of the Japanese Communist Party who had some linkage with the journalist but not by the Japanese Government or by lawmakers of a major ruling party, the LDP, that had been in power since 1955.

However, at least in 1980s, the Japanese Government knew that North Korea secretly sent secret agents to Japan to abduct Japanese.  But, the Government never made it public, though in the parliament some lawmakers asked related situations of some ministers in question session only to get non-detailed answers.  Nonetheless, the Japanese Government must have judged that Megumi Yokota was abducted by North Korea at least in 1980s.  Or even CIA must have informed, at least in 1980s, the Japanese Government of such covert activities in Japan by North Korea. But both the Japanese Government and the US Government did not announce it to the general public.

So, the Yokota family did not even dream of such a possibility that Megumi might have been abducted by North Korean secret agents for 20 years.  It is because the Japanese Government did not give any clue about the fate of their daughter Megumi to the Yokotas.

This is one of the most weird incidents in Japan since the end of WWII.

Before the end of WWII, the Korean Peninsula was ruled by the Empire of Japan.  After WWII, a million or more Koreans stayed in Japan.  Some became naturalized Japanese, but others continued to be South or North Koreans with a right of permanent residency in Japan.

They have been discriminated almost openly in the Japanese society till recently.  They could not become public officials, and major Japanese businesses would not employ them.  So, some of them engaged in the gambling business, mostly pachinko, a pinball gamble.  However, the pachinko gamble became so popular in Japan.  Accordingly, some Korean residents in Japan got big money.  And, Japanese politicians who needed big money for election came to have a strong tie with these Korean business men.

Especially, the LDP, a major conservative party that has been a ruling party since 1955 except a short period of time, has had many politicians who have been supported financially by those rich Korean residents in Japan.  Even today, it is thought that there are many lawmakers of both the ruling parties and the opposite parties who are financially supported by rich South and North Koreans living in Japan who are engaged in the gambling business.

So, the background of the strange attitude of the Japanese Government to the abduction of Megumi Yokota is very complicated, since some rich North Korean business men living in Japan had a strong tie with Japanese lawmakers and these North Koreans had of course a strong tie with North Korea.

For example, former Prime Minister of Japan Naoto Kan who was prime minister when the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident occurred in 2011 is believed to have some linkage with such Koreans living in Japan, though he is not a lawmaker of the LDP.

Today, Prime Minsiter Shinzo Abe, also a lawmaker of the LDP, is strongly supporting the Yokota family as well as other Japanese families whose sons or daughters were abducted by North Korea.

However, there have been no official apology and announcement from the Japanese Government that they knew that North Korea had abducted Megumi Yokota far before 1997 but did not inform the Yokota family of it for 20 years or so.

This is one of the cases that a government ignores victims, though there are many such cases in the world, including North Korea and the US.
