The 9/11 Terror and the present and future economic situations in the world seem to be linked together inevitably, since the level of intelligence of US elites and super-rich Americans counts in both the cases...

The Bush Administration is promoting use of corns and resultant ethanol for car fuels, causing a kind of food shortage panics in the world.

The key concepts must include the expected depletion of crude oil, the control of oil producing countries, and the huge oil dollars being spent in some Arab countries prosperous with a strong tie with the U.S. even without a fear of attacks by AlQaeda.

But, we had better review the 9/11 Terror so as not to be influenced by political hubris, often found in journalists and politicians here and there.



SECTION I: A Japanese Politician since 1977

There is an ex-politician in Japan who first became a member of the Diet, Japanese Parliament, in 1977 after putting an end to his career in the Japanese Government he had served since 1964, that is, coincidentally one year after the JFK Assassination in the U.S.

Until 2003, that is, two years after the 9/11 Terror, he was an active lawmaker in Tokyo, becoming a Cabinet minister a few times and playing a major role in politics especially during 1990’s when the incumbent ruling party LDP was in unstable conditions, having lost its ruling position for a year or so but gained it back again to sustain it to this day.

In the general election in 2003, he failed to be elected and was replaced by a younger ex-diplomat conservative candidate who however lost an election in 2005 by a margin to be replaced by a female ex-executive of the Ministry of Finance of the Japanese Government.

In Japan, it is said that a monkey is still a monkey if he accidentally falls from a tree, though a politician who has failed in an election is just a plain human being on the street if not so sadly.

But, it must be a big chance to start to live as a human being decent and pious.

(That is why Mr. Carter and Mr. Gore can be respected more than in their days in the White House as long as they are playing their roles as leaders in the American society.)

Indeed, if somebody had been in politics since 1977, you would surely think he must have various reliable information sources, so that he must know every truth behind the scene domestically and internationally.

But, the case is the opposite.

Mr. Hiroshi Kumagaya, a Japanese ex-lawmaker, reads the Economist and the notable book “Imperial Hubris” to understand the world and the U.S., which cannot be however a shame, since the world is so complicated with a myriad of systems, schemes, and people and their activities while not being totally managed by anybody but history itself.

SECTION II: Imperial Hubris

To our surprise if we are not brainwashed by the Era, the US troops are still engaged in combats in Afghanistan and Iraq while Mr. Osama bin Laden is still at large and Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Obama are so impressively competing in the Primary.

And nobody is yet to explain exactly why and how what happened and is going on since the 9/11 Terror Incident.

Indeed, he grimly and methodically discards common wisdom throughout this scathing and compelling take on counterterrorism. Imperial Hubris is not a book that will cheer Americans, regardless of their perspectives on the post-9/11 environment. We are, the author notes, losing the war on terror….

"Anonymous" has certainly accomplished his stated goal of contributing to a debate in the U.S. over foreign policy. He was the head of the CIA's Osama bin Laden unit in the late '90s, was interviewed as "Mike" in Coll's book GHOST WARS (see my 4/14/04 review), and is still a CIA analyst. Most of us by now have figured out that he is Mike Scheuer.

Sun Tzu said "know yourself, know your enemy," and Scheuer's main goal in IMPERIAL HUBRIS is to share what he knows about Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda, arguing that the official view is totally and dangerously wrong. It seems to me that Scheuer is for the most part right on target with his critique. There is one major problem with his proposal for what to do about it, which I will address below.

Mr. Richard A. Clarke, so far the most and only reliable source who worked in the White House on Sept. 11, 2001, commented on IMPERIAL HUBRIS in 2004.

SECTION III: Tora Bora in 2001

Probably, the most breathtaking moment in these six years and more of the War on Terror is surely the battle at Tora Bora in 2001, since Mr. Osama bin Laden might have been killed there actually by US air raids, though he could manage to escape if wounded.

Mr. Clarke recalled the days:

It looks like the great story, say, “The 9/11 Terror and AlQaeda,” came to a pause forever since the battle at Tora Bora.

The issue is, of course, whether Mr. Osama bin Laden’s escape was a conspiracy or a mere mistake, if not ordered by the President himself as the President is the supreme commander in cheif.

The fact may be that the elite Americans and super-rich Americans are not so smart and thus they failed at Tora Bora.

It also means that they have no smartness to carry out the 9/11 Terror Conspiracy, though they may be smart enough to launch the 9/11 Terror Conspiracy Theory.

Anyway, a future history textbook may read:
"When looking back from today, everything was over when Mr. Osama bin Laden ran away in one piece from Tora Bora in late 2001; and the rest has remained mystery forever..."


SECTION IV: LESSONS

As I presented above, one of the most experienced and educated ex-politician in Japan needs to rely on information offered by Imperial Hubris.

And, one of the most reliable person concerned with the War on Terror praises Imperial Hubris.

And, the author of Imperial Hubris wrote that Mr. Osama bin Laden’s aim was to replace U.S.-backed regimes in the Muslim world with Islamic regimes, which however is really a demand on the Muslim population.

Put simply, AlQaeda and Mr. Osama bin Laden had no intention to invade and occupy America more than the Empire of Japan in WWII. It must be from the beginning beyond their imagination.

They are not even a non-nonsense enemy of America, as AlQaeda has only tens of thousands of followers while the U.S. has 300 million population and strong military that can topple one regime in any country, including Iraq.

Then, what was the 9/11 Terror and the War on Terror?

However, at least as the consequence, American people are now going to choose an African-American President or a female President, which was a matter of madness before 2001.

Indeed, history is always a master of mankind.

(Without doubt, the history is God or Allah in the coolest form though still mankind-connected...)

Truly, leaving Mr. Osama bin Laden in Tora Bora forever, history is going to have Americans enter the new era with an African-American President or a female President who is faced with the weakened dollar, the subprime-loan triggered slump, the surge of prices of oil, and an ever increasing number of non-European-Americans among the US population.

So be humble to history to understand all the facets of the 9/11 Terror and the War on Terror, no matter if you are a well experienced and educated politician or a reliable ex-insider in the White House or the Office of Prime Minister, if not real or Jewish American Princess or Her Majesty.




(There is one Japanese book I have not been able to find in any book stores.

But each time I went out to find it, I discovered other interesting ones.

Today, too, I may find it or something else, such as the King James Version of the Bible.

When President Mr. Bush was competing with Senator Mr. Kerry in 2004 US Presidential Election, the President, to our surprise, approved use of the term “Yakuza,” meaning Japanese organized crime or its members, or the Mafia of the Japanese version, in a certain video used in his election campaign.

So, an inner circle of President Mr. Bush seems to be well informed of Japanese organized crimes.

According to a certain notable Japanese critic, the Bush administration adopted a policy toward Japan that was intended to eliminate influences of “Yakuza” on the Japanese economy, since the grave economic slump in Japan in 1990’s was apparently aggravated by involvement of, and interference by, Japanese organized crimes (maybe just like there is a shadow of the Mafia behind the US subprime loan problem).

According to his comment, in April 2002, CIA, FBI, and other US agencies had studied, as a kind of full-scale research and investigation, covert and secret connections and associations between Japanese politicians and organized crime.

Based on results of the investigation, the Bush Administration secretly requested the Koizumi Administration to purge politicians who were identified as having taken an interest in dark business for dark money, actually leading to downfall of some anti-Koizumi politicians mostly in the ruling party, LDP.

What is peculiar in this operation is that the clandestine operation against the Politician-Gangsters Symbiotic Relationship targeted also the politicians who had a strong tie with North Korea, since a majority of members of Japanese gang groups were identified as ethnic Koreans living in Japan.

Consequently, several conservative politicians were arrested or indicted, driven out of the stage of national politics, or forced to resign from, or neglected in appointment to, influential posts in the Japanese Government, while several liberal politicians, especially with a strong tie with North Korea, were also forced to suffer exposure of their doubtful or unlawful conducts that had been long concealed from the eye of the public.

However, the dark relationship with “Yakuza” in the Japanese society is not the monopoly of some politicians; traditionally, the entertainment business has been regarded as being inevitably linked with organized crime just like in the U.S.

Further it is said that, especially in local communities of Japan, there is a kind of a dark triangle of power balance among politicians, the police, and organized crime; when organized-crime members are targeted by the police, they ask a friendly politician for help since they can in secret help the politician in election and fund-raising for so-called political activities, according to some allegation.

But, what I am concerned much about is that this triangle has been expanded to include those working in the media industry in Japan, including newspaper companies.

(Even in the Livedoor incident in Japan, the young president of Livedoor, an IT company, is said to have tried to purchase in an unlawful manner, though supported by Lehman Brothers Holdings, a majority of stocks of a subsidized radio broadcaster of Fuji Television Network and thus Fuji TV itself, so as to control the TV station, while his original capital source was reportedly rooted deep in the underground world. However, as I wrote in the EEE Reporter blog at that time, the God interfered and the young billionaire's dream was broken as he was prosecuted and brought to justice, so that Fuji TV is now enjoying its independence. But, a TV station could be abused at any time by those ambitious people or shady groups.)

It is because when I was reading Japanese blog comments by a certain newspaper reporter on the Internet, I had some uncomfortable feeling, since the reporter used the specific first person in his writing, “Washi.”

In English, the first person is always “I.”

But in Japanese, there are some different expressions to mean "I," almost 22 different words including dialectal, local or obsolete ones; but major ones are,

Watakushi (decent), Watashi (normal), Boku (for boys, young males, or pompous males), Ore (for young males and grow-up males talking with friends), and Washi (for ordinary grown-up males in their own communities in Western Japan and gangsters).

The use of “Wahi” for the first person is very controversial, since one of the largest organized crime is based in a Western Japan city and their members are mostly well known for using “Washi” as their own first person, though it is common for grown-up males in Western Japan to call themselves “Washi” in private conversations.

Especially, this dialect expression became notable nationwide when a culprit called himself "The Monster with 21 Faces" used this first person in many intimidation letters he sent to certain companies and the police in a famous extortion case around 1985. In the letter, the use of "Washi" really gave an impression that he was associated with Yakuza members prone to do any harms to citizens if necessary for money or such.

With these facts, “Washi” somehow invokes a dark image especially when it is heard in Tokyo, the central city of Eastern Japan where “Washi” has not been traditionally used.

So, it is a big surprise that a certain reporter of the first-rate newspaper company uses this first person even in his personal blog.

The reporter is somehow prominent in Japan as he published a book on off-the-book money for covert operation by the Japanese Government.

But, as he also presented his detailed knowledge on “Yakuza” in his blog, he might get too much accustomed to such an environment where relationships between some politicians, some ex-public prosecutors, some lawyers, some elite police officers, some businessmen, and gangsters are deplorably interwoven.

Indeed, the newspaper company should instill discipline to their staff writers and reporters, so that they will never use any first person that would create discomfort among readers and subscribers. Yesterday I reviewed the video of the debate between “Hillary” and “Obama” presented by ABC.

Mr. Obama looked defensive without being aggressive at all, as if he could not have any supporters there.

So, this morning I tried a little simulation on 2008 Presidential Election as follows:

Yesterday, I also went to a bookstore and bought a book written by Ms. O Son Fa, a Korean Japanese woman who conquered anti-Japanese brainwash she had experienced in Korea to be an admirer of Japan and Japanese the virtue of which is supported by the Japanese version of Buddhism.

One day, while she was still under a strong influence of anti-Japanese education of Korea though working in Japan, she met a Taiwanese. So, she said, “You must have been taught every bad thing about Japan and Japanese in school in Taiwan?” The Taiwanese said, “Yes.”

So, Ms. O Son Fa further said, “Then, you came to despise and hate Japanese, didn’t you?” Her friend from Taiwan that had been long under Japanese occupation before WWII replied, “No."

"In my home and community, everybody talked about Japanese in the opposite way. (So, I came to Japan with due respect to Japan and Japanese)” said the young Taiwanese.

Ms. O Son Fa gradually got rid of anti-Japanese ideology she had been taught in school in Korea so as to become an admirer of Japan and Japanese the virtue of which is supported by the Japanese version of Buddhism.

(Yet, she was attacked in various ways, though not physical assaults, by many Korean prostitutes living in Japan, as another book she had written depicted their lives so real...Even the South Korean Government reportedly harassed her returning home to Korea due to her writing against the anti-Japanese ideology...)

The aftermath of the ABC-hosted debate between “Obama” and “Hillary” might still continue to ensue for some time with almost 20,000 comments delivered to an ABC online site.

But, I have really recalled a scene, from the movie "Nixon," that President Richard Nixon and Mr. Henry Kissinger together fell on their knees and prayed to God in the White House. The present issue seems to be who with whom for what will pray to God in the White House between 2009 and 2013.

While this film is full of profanity, racial slurs, and alcohol use, it is merely a reflection of the tapes made by Mr. Nixon himself. Clearly, Nixon is an enigma, and one Stone is not afraid to tackle.

SECTION I: Beijing Olympic Games 2008

I do not want a failure in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

It must be Chinese people that should find inappropriateness of this year’s Olympic Games to be held in China.

Public statements by President Hu Jintao, Prime Minister Wen Jiabao and other senior officials suggest China's leaders are well aware of the widespread corruption but have been unwilling to curb it. The report says: "The odds of an average corrupt official going to jail are at most 3 out of 100, making corruption a high-return, low-risk activity." The reason: If Mr. Hu comes down too hard on corruption, he risks losing support of delegates to the recent party Congress who elected him. Those delegates are drawn largely from party officials at the local and provincial level.

Mr. Pei is not alone in assessing corruption in China. George Zhibin Gu, an investment banker who was educated at Nanjing University and earned a Ph.D. at the University of Michigan, has suggested corruption may destroy China's economy that has been surging ahead by 8 to 10 percent a year. In the West, a 3 percent growth rate is respectable...

Unemployment and under-employment, in which a worker has only one or two days of work a week, may be more than 25 percent. Paradoxically, China has begun to experience shortages of skilled labor needed for its expanding industry...

In China there are about 117 men per 100 women, meaning 17 men out of 117 cannot find wives. That has led to kidnapping girls or importing women from Southeast Asia.

I hope that Prime Minister Mr. Yasuo Fukuda and President Mr. George W. Bush, when they visit Beijing for the Olympic opening ceremony, will kindly advise Chinese leaders on this issue of the large-scale public-sector corruption, so that China will find the shift to democracy to be inevitable in the modern society.

From a historical point of view, it is however no wonder if the Tibet issue triggers a new revolution in China soon or later.

(By the way, do you know that the "National Flag of Tibet" was designed based on the navy flag of the (past) Empire of Japan which is however still used by the Maritime Defense-Forces of Japan today?)

Interestingly, some Japanese critic once said that in North Korea people were too poor and hungry to carry out a revolution; but now Chinese people are gaining lots of stamina and physical strength due to economic boom.


SECTION II: Double-Dip Recession Possible in the U.S.

A certain ex-bureaucrat politician in Japan showed her concerns about the double-dip recession in the U.S., even if the present sub-prime loan problem is somehow contained in near future.

The most effective solution, according to her idea, is carrying out large-scale public fund infusion in one shot to the related market at a critical moment.

As Japan experienced one or more double-dip recessions in 1990’s, her experiences might be suggesting something worth listening to, though top US economists seem to have already studied it well or at least to some extent.

Double-dip recessions are rare, and not well defined. It is common for a period of shrinking GDP to be punctuated by at least one positive quarter, as occurred in 2001, but the imprecision of GDP and frequent revisions means that at the time, it didn’t feel like much of a rebound occurred. An exception is 1980-1982 which the official score keeper, the National Bureau of Economic Research, considers two recessions but some say should be considered one, punctuated by a year of growth.

ABC, you should be ashamed of the debate that you just aired. Here was an opportunity to do your job, help inform the public on important issues of the day. Apparently, the burning issue is whether a person where's an American flag in the lapel. My guess is that Bush, Cheney, Rumsfield and all the others who got us into the war in Iraq were wearing their American flag pins while they lied to the American public and got us involved in an unnecessary war that has made American an international pariah and is destroying our economy. Condi Rice most likely was wearing an American flag pin when she chaired the meeting authorizing torture. Bush wore his American flag pin when he issued signing statements, refusing to enforce the provisions of 750 laws adopted by Congress. And on and on and on. What establishes love for this country is not the wearing of the flag or any other gratuitous gesture. Instead, it's supporting the Constitution, including the separation of powers and the bill of rights; it's providing support and services to those serving this country in the military; it's giving voice to all Americans, not just those with money; it's serving in government for the public good, not for personal gain. There are at least three ways in which aid to Israel is different from that of any other country. First, since 1982, U.S. aid to Israel has been transferred in one lump sum at the beginning of each fiscal year, which immediately begins to collect interest in U.S. banks. Aid that goes to other countries is disbursed throughout the year in quarterly installments.

Second, Israel is not required to account for specific purchases…

A third difference is the sheer amount of aid the U.S. gives to Israel, unparalleled in the history of U.S. foreign policy… In other words, Israel, a country of approximately 6 million people, is currently receiving more U.S. aid than all of Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean combined when you take out Egypt and Colombia...

SECTION IV: Armageddon

Around 1980, I remember I read some about Armageddon predicted to occur in the Middle East in 1984.

In the summer of 1945, Japan was attacked by the U.S. with two nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

However, as symbolized by the success of Sony Corporation, Japan recovered and even helped China economically grow by offering for decades aid worth over one hundred billion dollars, just like US accumulated aid to Israel, including money, industrial properties, business know-how, and so on.

And now, from Davos to the White House, everybody seems to be under influence of money China is distributing for its covert operation to gain secret or open support for whatever policies China is pushing while neglecting human rights, for example, of Tibetans.

And meanwhile, in 1990, the total amount of land prices all over Japan reached $24 trillion (which surpassed the then total value of the US land) in its bubble economic boom.

In 1997, the total amount of land prices all over Japan fell to $17 trillion as the bubble was squashed.

In short, Japan lost $ 7 trillion in the decade, while the subprime loan problem today has violently consumed only $1 trillion.

What I mean is that Armageddon might not happen in the Middle East or around Israel involving the Vatican, but it can be triggered by China, which can be however only stopped by Japan, since Japan is the only country that have learnt holy lessons from WWII through nuclear bomb attacks and from the true modern-age bubble economy through a $7 trillion loss while helping China expand its economy to the extent that it can really threat the global environment.

And, one of the creeds of the Buddhism is that mankind may experience Armageddon as many times as necessary to attain enlightenment while repeating the building of civilization and its destruction until every member of mankind gets to the spiritual status called the Buddha.



(Now, folks and Mlles., look up at the sky. Then you will feel somebody in Iraq, Afghanistan, Sudan, and Tibet also looking up at the sky. If you feel stupid in terms of your human relationships or financial conditions, still a miracle could happen, if not one portending Armageddon but heralding something, something so nice…maybe…or not…since it looked like another Mars…

One of the most popular Japanese blogs on economy argued that G7 Financial Authorities Meeting turned out to become a salon of incompetent dignitaries by quoting a UK news agency’s analysis, which is however wrong in both the conclusion and the choice of the UK news agency.

Ms. Satsuki Katayama, one of the most popular female lawmakers and ex-executive of Japan’s Ministry of Finance, wrote in her Japanese blog: G7 does not function timely with the U.S. and Europe leaning to stagflation under inflation; especially she pointed that the US has unduly refrained from pumping sufficient public money into the market while its economy is at the end of cliff, which is a typical delay caused by political situations; however I have another idea.

It is power of IT, namely computer power, that is a key to understanding the state of G7, since all the high-ranking bureaucrats depend on computers in their analysis and decision making, while they cannot fully comprehend the nature and functions of computer software.

Remember that it took several years for Mr. Alan Greenspan to comprehend the power of IT and its contribution to a mysterious and drastic increase in productivity in the US economy in 1990’s.

As the software Mr. Greenspan was using could cope with the situations until 2002, he could somehow manage the US economy. But, as the situation surpassed the ability of the computers and their users, including Mr. Greenspan, none could have a correct and clear view on the subprime loan business, oil price hikes, and the declining of value of the dollar.

In the G7 Meeting, as the financial ministers and central-bank heads could not fully use computers to comprehend the global situation which actually requires more computer power for analysis, they could not offer any reasonable foresight and measures to the world.

It is a lack of ability to make the best use of computers for analysis and solution that is a key to understanding the state and the minds of G7 meeting participants.

I suppose the first-grade computer engineers and scientists in the world would agree with me.


SECTION II: IT and Japan and China and India

The factors that have enabled Chinese economic success so far:
(1) Japan did not push the U.S. to attack China in the era of the Cold War and the Vietnam War.

(2) President Nixon’s decision on de-escalating antagonism on China.

(3) Japan’s huge financial aid to China until early 2000’s.

(4) Japanese industries' massive leveraging Chinese economic potential to the extent of causing deflation in Japan.

(5) Japanese industries' decision to transfer modern technologies to China to enhance the scope of business operation and their activities.

(6) China could timely rely on emerging IT power so that it could make a quantum leap in absorbing, introducing, and applying modern technologies and business practices which would otherwise require 100 years to access.

(7) China’s traditional cultural base as a merchant-characterized race though not as a craftsman-characterized race, which match the trend of global commerce expansion.

(8) China’s tradition of spiritual culture, including Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism.

(9) The well maintained social order by the Chinese Communist Party, which however must be superseded by introduction of true democracy.


The factors that have enabled Indian economic success so far:
(1) Good examples of economic success of Japan.

(2) India could timely rely on emerging IT power so that it could make a quantum leap in absorbing, introducing, and applying modern technologies and business practices which would otherwise require 100 years to access.

(3) India’s tradition of spiritual culture.

(4) India’s experiences and lessons well learnt as the past colony of the U.K.

Anyway, the major factors of success, so far, of China and India are Japan and IT.


SECTION III: Chinese Dream Faked


China has a long history of wars, revolutions, insurgents, Sino-centric diplomacy, and conspiracies as well as traitorous acts, matching those of the Roman Empire, one legacy of which can be like the following:

China should first pull out all its troops from Tibet before starting to discuss anything great with Japan and the U.S.

The Worldly Cares, The Deceitfulness, and Other Lusts



Yesterday, it was fine in Tokyo, especially around a certain museum, designed by a pious Buddhist, the late Mr. Kisho Kurokawa, which however still looks like lingering in the past era with an old paradigm of materials, engineering, and scale and volume, though its concept is modern enough to accommodate art-loving Japanese in this early 21st century.


PART I: The Earth Rising on The Moon

Now, the history of mankind has entered the new phase, since Japan is now presenting a new picture of the earth rising over the horizon of the moon as the first since a US astronaut did in 1970’s.

As Japan has won this glory of taking and presenting this historic picture with its moon-exploration vehicle flying now around the moon, we can assume that Japan is qualified by the God as the country that can represent the mankind, though it has had hard times since the end of WWII.

Indeed, Japan has never engaged in any wars (unlike the U.S., the U.K., France, other NATO countries, Russia, India, and China) after WWII in its process to become the second largest economy in the world.

PART II: Paradox of Democracy

Especially after WWII, both in the U.S. and Japan, every poor man and woman has had a voting right.

In the US society, on average after WWII, 55% or more voters among the population are poor; but they have been unable to change the political system.

In the US, the “Republican Party” and the “Democratic Party” are as a matter of fact two ruling parties.

But, it is apparent that poor Americans have to raise a revolution and establish the third major party which might be called “Spiritual American-Dreamers Party.”

However, it has not happened due to the Paradigm of Wealth the poor people are brainwashed to believe.

In Japan, things are not so different; on average after WWII, 55% or more voters among the population are poor; but they have been unable to change the political system, either.

So, I would present a simple illustration below which tells that no matter how poor those voters are, so long as they want to be rich in the present social system based on the paradigm of wealth, a majority would vote for ruling parties.

Especially, in Japan, people know that all the leaders and executives of communism-based or socialism-based parties are rich and enjoying lucrative lives while claiming arrogantly that they can teach, guide, and lead poor workers. If you have not graduated from first rate universities and been qualified as a scholar, a professor, a lawyer, a doctor, or an elite journalist or activist, you cannot have a successful career in those liberal parties in Japan.

In my feeling, those liberal executives living rich lives are in ridicule of poor people.

It is just like Chinese communist leaders are living super-rich lives in Beijing while hundreds of millions of farmers and laborers, in addition to Tibetans, are suffering poverty.


PART III: WORDS OF GOD

PART IV: 50 Years Later

When the late Mr. Akio Morita of Sony was promoting the sale of transistor radios in the U.S. some 50 years ago, he got a big order.

A certain prominent US company ordered Sony’s transistor radios in a quantity of 100,000 (which was big since Sony was a small company in Japan then).

Morita visited the US company to sign a contract but did not cut a deal eventually, since the president of the company requested that Sony’s radios should have bear the brand name not of Sony but of his company for resale.

Morita claimed that Sony’s radios should be sold under the brand name of Sony.

The president of the US company laughed with scorn at Morita, saying that nobody knew the brand Sony in America and thus nobody would buy Sony’s transistor radios in America. “It took 50 years even for my company to be successful in the American market.”

But, Morita said indignantly but coolly that in 50 years his company Sony would prevail just like the US company could do in 50 years. “So, 50 years ago, nobody knew the brand of your company in America. As you have succeeded in 50 years, we will also succeed in 50 years in the American market.”

Though other Sony’s executives in Tokyo then wanted to close the contract, Morita being engaged in sales promotion of Sony’s transistor radios in the US market firmly turned it down, which apparently was a very right decision, since everybody today knows the brand Sony in the American and global markets.
