Jesus Said, I Am the Son of God

There is a very decisive scene depicted in the Gospel of Mark.

Mar 14:60 And the high priest stood up in the midst, and asked Jesus, saying, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?
Mar 14:61 But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?
Mar 14:62 And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

This is one of decisive pieces of evidence that this Gospel was written by Christ Jesus Himself.

First of all, this is the most important information about Christ Jesus and hence the most important paragraphs in all the entire Gospels.  This is the very core of Christianity either of 2000 years ago or of today.  And who was allowed to write these sentences without direct permission of Christ Jesus while nobody was in such a position or a situation when Christ Jesus was persecuted, crucified, and resurrected.  Therefore, the passage must have been written by Christ Jesus Himself.

This is a very, very extraordinary witness that Christ Jesus thought He himself was the Son of God.  And He confessed it not to his followers but to his enemy.  Conversely, Christ Jesus was preaching the gospel in ancient Palestine to be summoned and declare that He was the Son of God.  This situation must have been one of his goals through his mission.

In other word, if you were just a follower of Christ Jesus,  how could you write such sentences without concrete proof and direct approval from Christ Jesus since He forbade His followers and even the devils to discuss His status?

Mar 1:34 And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him.

Mar 3:11 And unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God.

After resurrection, Christ Jesus worked secretly behind the scene to make Paul succeed in his preaching the gospel.  But eventually one day, Christ Jesus must have thought that it was necessary to leave a correct record of his mission.

Till the issuance of this Gospel, it was a tradition and tacit consent for early Christians not to write any books and reports on Christ Jesus.  Probably they thought that if they had delivered such a book on Christ Jesus, it would have become a grave challenge to other Judaists at the time.  Early Christians could not make unnecessary enemies from surrounding Judaists who did not yet come to believe Christ Jesus.  To compile and issue another Bible or Testament meant a clear separation of followers of Christ Jesus from other conventional Judaists.

So, the one who could write and issue the first Gospel, presenting Christ Jesus as the Son of God, which meant a decisive separation from Judaism, was Christ Jesus Himself.

The Gospel of Mark must have been written by Christ Jesus Himself, taking into account the grave meaning of declaration of Christ Jesus's being the Son of God against the whole Judaist community.

Judaists or Hebrews did not enjoy uninterrupted independence for a very long and continuous period in the ancient world.

Roughly speaking, they built a real independent kingdom around 1200 BC but they were conquered by Babylonians around 600 BC and taken to Babylon as captives.   Though they could return to Palestine in 538 BC, Hebrews were put under rule of Persians and then successors of Alexander the Great till 160 BC.  In 63 BC, Roman general Pompey and his troops invaded Judea.  Hebrews lost independence.  Since then Judaists were virtually subject to Rome though they had nominal king till 6 CE when Judea was made a Roman province.

So, put simply, in 2000 years before the emergence of Christ Jesus, Judaists were an independent nation only for  700 years.  Especially, in 1000 years since the era of King David, they enjoyed independence only for 500 years.

Israelites never conquered Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and other regions around the Mediterranean Sea except part of Palestine in the pre-Christian world.  And for 2000 years in the Christian Era, they had almost nothing to do with Palestine till 1948.

Judaists belong to their holy books more than to Palestine of today.

In addition, Christ Jesus did not tell, 2000 years ago, Isaelites to fight and defeat Romans in order to secure complete independence.

It is very dubious that Judaists have inherent right to occupy Palestine today.

1.1 Prehistory
Between 2.6 and 0.9 million years ago, at least four episodes of hominine dispersal from Africa to the Levant are known, each culturally distinct. The flint tool artifacts of these early humans have been discovered on the territory of the current state of Israel, including, at Yiron, the oldest stone tools found anywhere outside Africa.

1.2 Egyptian rule
During the 2nd millennium BC, Canaan, part of which later became known as Israel, was dominated by Egypt.

1.3 Early Israelites
The first record of the name Israel (as ysrỉꜣr) occurs in the Merneptah stele, erected for Egyptian Pharaoh Merneptah c. 1209 BCE, "Israel is laid waste and his seed is not."[7] William Dever sees this "Israel" in the central highlands as a cultural and probably political entity, more an ethnic group rather than an organized state.

1.4 Israel and Judah
The Hebrew Bible describes constant warfare between the Jews and other tribes, including the Philistines, whose capital was Gaza. The Bible states that King David founded a dynasty of kings and that his son Solomon built a Temple. No material evidence indisputably of Solomon's reign has been found.

Around 930 BCE, the kingdom split into a southern Kingdom of Judah and a northern Kingdom of Israel.

1.5 Babylonian rule 586–538 BCE
In 586 BCE King Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon conquered Judah. According to the Hebrew Bible, he destroyed Solomon's Temple and exiled the Jews to Babylon.

2 Classical era (538 BCE–636 CE)
2.1 Persian and Hellenistic rule 538–160 BCE
In 538 BCE, Cyrus the Great of Persia conquered Babylon and took over its empire. Cyrus issued a proclamation granting subjugated nations (including the people of Judah) religious freedom (for the original text see the Cyrus Cylinder). According to the Hebrew Bible 50,000 Judeans, led by Zerubabel, returned to Judah and rebuilt the temple. A second group of 5,000, led by Ezra and Nehemiah, returned to Judah in 456 BCE although non-Jews wrote to Cyrus to try to prevent their return.

2.2 Hasmonean dynasty 160–37 BCE
The Hasmonean dynasty of (Jewish) priest-kings ruled Judea with the Pharisees, Saducees and Essenes as the principal Jewish social movements.

In 125 BCE the Hasmonean King John Hyrcanus subjugated Edom and forcibly converted the population to Judaism.[28] In 64 BCE the Roman general Pompey conquered Syria and intervened in the Hasmonean civil war in Jerusalem. In 47 BCE the lives of Julius Caesar and his protege Cleopatra were saved by 3,000 crack Jewish troops sent by King Hyrcanus II and commanded by Antipater, whose descendants Caesar made kings of Judea.[

2.3 Herodian kingdom 37 BCE–6 CE
From 37 BCE to 6 CE, the Herodian dynasty, Jewish-Roman client kings, descended from Antipater, ruled Judea. Herod the Great considerably enlarged the temple (see Herod's Temple), making it one of the largest religious structures in the world.

2.4 Roman rule 6–390
Judea was made a Roman province in 6 CE, following the transition of Judean tetrarchy into a Roman realm. Following the next decades, though prosperous, the society suffered increasing tensions between Greco-Roman and Judean populations.

There is a very interesting but terrible paragraph in the Gospel of Mark.

Mar 8:33 But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.

The context of this scene where Peter was rebuked by Christ Jesus is that He told His disciples how he would be betrayed and left by His disciples and killed eventually by "the elders, the chief priests, and scribes" but He would rise from His death in three days.  But Peter, having heard Christ Jesus speaking so openly, started to rebuke Him.  Then immediately, Christ Jesus called out, "Peter, you Satan!"  

The fact that such a terrible scenes was not erased but left in the Gospel is very meaningful.  According to a Japanese professor, it means that the Gospel of Mark was written to challenge authority of St. Peter and other 11 members of Twelve Apostles.

In Mark the disciples, and especially the Twelve, move from lack of perception of Jesus to rejection of the "way of suffering" to flight and denial – even the women who received the first proclamation of his resurrection can be seen as failures for not reporting the good news. There is much discussion of this theme among scholars. Some argue that the author of Mark was using the disciples to correct "erroneous" views in his own community concerning the reality of the suffering messiah, others that it is an attack on the Jerusalem branch of the church for resisting the extension of the gospel to the gentiles, or a mirror of the convert's usual experience of the initial enthusiasm followed by growing awareness of the necessity for suffering. It certainly reflects the strong theme in Mark of Jesus as the "suffering just one" portrayed in so many of the books of the Jewish scriptures, from Jeremiah to Job and the Psalms, but especially in the "Suffering Servant" passages Isaiah. It also reflects the Jewish scripture theme of God's love being met by infidelity and failure, only to be renewed by God. And in the real-world context in which the gospel was written, the persecutions of the Christians of Rome under Nero, the failure of the disciples and Jesus' denial by Peter himself would have been powerful symbols of faith, hope and reconciliation.

So it looks natural that Protestants since Martin Luther (1483-1546) have claimed that believers should only refer to the Bible but should not trust blindly the Vatican.  Indeed in the Gospel of Mark, Christ Jesus called Peter Satan.

All four gospels tell a story in which Jesus' death and resurrection are the crucial redemptive events.[55] There are, however, important differences between the four:

- Unlike Matthew and Luke, Mark does not trace Jesus' ancestry back to King David, and there is no mention that he is the offspring of a virgin mother and a divine father

- Unlike John, Mark never calls Jesus "God", nor does he claim that Jesus existed as a divine being prior to his earthly life

Today most of scholars don't think that this Gospel was written by Mark who followed St. Peter.  If Mark had written this Gospel, it would have been an unforgivable act to depict Peter in such a manner.

In my theory, the Gospel of the Mark was written by Christ Jesus Himself who resurrected and continued to live secretly, helping Paul secretly and promoting diffusion of His teaching secretly.  As His Apostles and followers who survived the tragedy of His crucifixion to continue to live around Jerusalem did not preach and teach His teaching in a manner that satisfied Christ Jesus, He must have decided to present His version of the Bible.

If this theory should be proved, the Gospel of Mark will be renamed the Gospel of Jesus Himself.

In this case, the Vatican will be totally demoted if its religious merit is not totally forfeited.

Where did Christ Jesus go after resurrection as a matter of reality?

From a religious point of view, we can simply believe what the Gospels tell: Christ Jesus ascended to Heaven while followers were watching.  But in reality, where did he go?

Probably He was in Damascus.  And He met Saul coming from Jerusalem to persecute followers of Christ Jesus.  Then Saul got through the well-know conversion process to change his name to Paul.  And Paul started to travel preaching the gospel as if he had been guided by Christ Jesus.

In other word, Christ Jesus needed somebody to act as his locum tenens.  As Christ Jesus became an enemy of the Roman Empire, He could not act overly.  So, He chose Paul for a large scale mission to gentiles or to those who lived outside Palestine.  But, it is considered that Christ Jesus traveled and moved along with Paul and his followers.  That is why Paul sometimes heard voices of a holy spirit on his way so as to change a route and an itinerary.  Christ Jesus gave warning to Paul so that Paul could avoid unnecessary troubles and dangers.

With this strong direct support from Christ Jesus, Paul could carry out his mission to regions covering Asia Minor and Greece in three times.

Paul probably could not spot Christ Jesus walking with him or traveling with him.  But in a village ahead of Paul or in a town behind Paul, Christ Jesus in a very humble form must have been working so as to work miracles to support Paul's efforts to preach the gospel.  Therefore, voices of a holy spirit or an angel Paul sometimes heard, according to the the ACTs of the Apostles, must have been actually from Christ Jesus.

But Paul traveled to Rome eventually.  Did Christ Jesus go with Paul to Rome?  Probably yes.

Paul remained in Rome for at least two years (Acts 28:30), where, despite being a prisoner, he wrote a very large part of what we now have as the New Testament (see New Testament Fact File) - epistles to the Ephesians (see also Ephesus), Philippians, Colossians, Philemon, and possibly Hebrews. Although the Bible record does not include his fate, most scholars believe that he was eventually acquitted of the charges and released in 63 or 64 A.D., upon which he made his way back through Greece and Asia Minor (i.e. Turkey) before again being arrested and returned to Rome where he was martyred, by beheading, or torn apart by wild animals in the arena before a cheering crowd, about 67 A.D., during the time of Emperor Nero.

In the meantime, probably Christ Jesus went back to Jerusalem to lead believers out of the city with Peter before the start of the First Jewish–Roman War (66–73 CE).

At Pentecost in 66 C.E., however, the sign of God’s abandonment of the Temple at Jerusalem was given to the 24 chief priests who ministered in the inner sanctuary: “We are leaving from here.” This was a signal to Peter (and to the remaining Christians in Jerusalem) to flee the city — and they did. Most retired to Pella about 60 miles northeast of Jerusalem, from where they probably were quickly transported by their Greek neighbors into safer areas. In some regions east of the Jordan the Gentiles “escorted to the frontiers any who chose to emigrate” of those Jews “who showed no revolutionary designs.”

The apostle Peter may have been with these last remnants of Christians to leave Judaea. But he did not remain in Pella, or any area of the Middle East. He had an important mission to perform before he died. The apostle Paul was at that time in prison at Rome. And since it was then apparent that Christ was not returning in that generation, it became imperative to bring together a set of standard books (like those of the Old Testament) for later Christians which would have the authority of the apostles behind them.

The maintenance of purity within Christian doctrine required a diligent effort of the leading apostles to provide a canon of New Testament scriptures which would last “until the day dawn” (2 Peter 1:19). Thus, it appears that Peter in the summer of 66 C.E. journeyed, via Pella, to Rome to see the apostle Paul about this very matter. Indeed, there would have been no other reason for Peter to have gone to the capital city of the Empire, other than to consult with Paul before his death concerning the canonization of the New Testament which was the most important endeavor that the apostles could leave for future generations.

There can really be no doubt that Peter finally went to Rome and that he and Paul conversed together shortly before their deaths. About 170 C.E. Dionysius, who was the minister in charge of the Corinthian church, mentioned that both apostles “taught together in Italy and were martyred about the same time.” 8 Irenaeus also said that the congregation of Rome was established and founded “by the two most glorious apostles Peter and Paul.” 9 Then there was Gaius, a Roman elder who lived near the end of the 2nd century. He said that it was possible to point to the very tombs of the apostles Peter and Paul in the vicinity of Rome. These were the tombs “of those who founded this church [the church at Rome].”

Then after death of St. Paul and St. Peter, where did Christ Jesus go?　At least something grave must have happened to Christ Jesus in the Italian Peninsula in 79 AD.

In the year of 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius erupted in one of the most catastrophic and famous eruptions of all time. Historians have learned about the eruption from the eyewitness account of Pliny the Younger, a Roman administrator and poet.

Magnesium is abundant in the world; however the production of magnesium is neither cheap or clean. There are various ways of extracting magnesium, ranging from an electrolytic process to high temperature method called the Pidgeon process. 

Dr. Yabe has devised a high temperature solution by concentrating solar collectors and a solar-pump laser to reach a temperature of 3,700 degrees centigrade. This high heat method is used to burn magnesium oxide extracted from seawater. The solar-pumped laser is necessary to help obtain this high temperature because concentrated solar energy alone would not be enough to generate 3,700 degrees C.
Engineers at MagPower have developed a metal-air cell that uses water and ambient air to react with a magnesium anode, to generate electricity. A magnesium based version of the lithium-ion rechargeable cell has been created by Dr. Doron Aurbach at Bar-Ilan University in Israel.

We can burn hydrogen which is generated from magnesium and water. The reaction between magnesium and water also generates heat. Through clever use of this heat, the hydrogen generated from the reaction can be burned to produce high-temperature, high-pressure steam. This steam can then be used to rotate turbine to obtain mechanical power, or it can be used for electrical power generation.

In this case, the amount of heat generated from 1kg of magnesium is 25 Mega Joules including the heat generated by burning hydrogen. Coal, on the other hand, generates 30 Mega Joules, which is slightly higher than that from magnesium. However, there is nothing useful remaining after coal is burned; it is not easy to dispose of cinder, and a large amount of carbon dioxide (CO₂) is produced as coal burns.

On the other hand, magnesium oxide, which is produced as magnesium burns (reacts with oxygen), can be recycled to obtain magnesium. The only substances that are produced through burning magnesium are magnesium oxide and water (generated through burning hydrogen) and there is no carbon dioxide emission. There may be a time in the future when magnesium is burned instead of coal at electrical power generation plants.

There are 1800 trillion tons of magnesium in the sea water covering the earth.  This amount is equivalent to 100,000 years of consumption of crude oil.  Magnesium is taken from the sea to be refined.  And it is burnt in a power generation plant where magnesium oxide is output along with electricity.  This magnesium oxide undergoes application of a solar-pumped laser, resulting in conversion from magnesium oxide to pure magnesium.  Then this recycled magnesium goes into the same cycle for power generation and application of a laser as the figure below shows.

Today, there are 13.4 million Judaists in the world, 5.4 million of them live in Israel and 8 million live in other regions of the world.

Among the eight million Jewish people outside Israel, a half of them, that is, four  million people live in the US.  And among this four million, more than 2.5 million Jewish people live in New York.

(In other study, there are 6.15 million Jewish people today living in the US.)

Doctors in private practice in New York consist of Judaists in a ratio of 99.99%.  Jewish people account for 5% of those who occupy leading positions in businesses listed in the New York Stock Market.

In a global scope, among top 400 richest men in the world, Jewish people account for 23%.  And among these super-rich Judaists, those involved in real estate business accounts for 20%.

The key to success of Jewish people in the US is their enthusiasm in education and upward mobility.  In most ethnic groups in America, children of blue-collar workers tend to become blue-collar workers, too.  But children of Jewish families living on wages earned in factories or in their own small business never succeed professions of their parents. They have all graduated from colleges and universities to be white-collar workers, middle-class experts, or rich men in various fields.

Specifically, in elite universities in the US, Jewish professors account for 35% of all the professors in those top universities in 1990, though the ratio of Jewish professors in all the professors in the US was just 2% in 1940.

There is a folklore story in a local region around Tokyo.

In a village, people said that there was a wolf in forests and hills nearby.  The wolf chased a villager walking through fields at dusk or at night.  It would not jump, attack, and eat a foot passenger until he stumbled and fell.  But if he could safely walk to the village, the wolf just played a role of a kind of escort.

Indeed once wolves lived in Japan; they are called Japanese wolves.  But they became extinct 100 years ago in Kyusyu, Shikoku, and Honsyu of the Japanese archipelago.  (In Hokkaido, the northernmost island of the archipelago, there also lived another type of wolves that also went extinct 100 years ago.)  Anyway, today no wolves, neither of the Japanese type nor of a northern type, exist in Japan.

However, dogs are also not loved by Christ Jesus, either.

So, I don't think it is appropriate for people to keep a dog.  The more they love dogs, the less they love poor people around them.

According to recent studies on mitochondria, direct ancestors of human beings who today live outside Africa left the African Continent about 100,000 years ago.   However, based on mitochondria studies of dogs, it was 130,000 years ago that dogs were separated from wolves in their evolution.   As wolves did not live in Africa, it is a mystery that dogs and wolves were separated from each other without intervention from our ancestors.  Maybe Neanderthal men kept and domesticated wolves to turn them eventually to dogs.

In other theory based on DNA study of dogs, they were produced from wolves by people living in East Asia between 40,000 years ago and 15,000 years ago.

Yet, one thing sure is that without human beings any wolves have not changed to dogs.  We are responsible to manage dogs.

With advancement of science, now human beings can handle cells and genes of any living species.  We will be soon able to create any new type of species, such as a man with huge wings.  It is dangerous.  This technology can apply to biological weapons.

So, even if the human species should not be terminated in the 21st century, a different version of mankind might be living in the 22nd century.  There is a possibility that the new version of mankind will not share the same emotion, ethic, philosophy, and religion as we have today.    We must stop easy development of genetic engineering and embryo-stem cells.

Roughly speaking mankind started its history of civilization when ancient Egyptians built the Great Pyramids in Giza 550 years before Abraham started to leave a territory of a Sumerian kingdom in Mesopotamia.

Roughly speaking, the mainstream of our history of civilization is as follows:

2500 BC - The Great Pyramids are built in Giza, Egypt.

2000 BC - Abraham leaves Ur, heading for Canaan and traveling even to Egypt.

1500 BC - Moses was born while Hebrews stay in Egypt.

1000 BC - King David set the capital of his kingdom in Jerusalem.

500 BC - The Old Testaments are compiled.  The Buddha starts to preach.  Confucius travels to establish his school of philosophy.  Socrates enhances Greek philosophy.　　　　

AD 1 - Christ Jesus was born; Judaists are expelled from Jerusalem and Judea by Romans.

500 -  The Western Roman Empire falls while Christianity is prevailing with the Vatican.

1000 - The first Crusade fights Muslims occupying Jerusalem.

1500 - Judaists and Muslims are driven out of Western Europe and Columbus reaches America.

2000 -  Second Coming of Christ expected after Judaists have returned to Jerusalem and Judea.


This is mainstream history of mankind whether you love it or not.

We have to think about what to do as a member of mankind in the last phase of our history.

The Bible shifts its focus in Genesis 12 from the history of the entire human race to a man named Abram, the first Hebrew, and he lived in Ur of the Chaldees. Later God appeared to Abram and promised him that if he would leave his country and journey to a land that he has never seen, God would make of his descendants a great nation and through them the Savior of the world would come, through his "seed." Later God changed his name to Abraham which means "father of a many nations" and he obeyed God and journeyed to the land of Canaan. The Lord also spoke a promise that anyone who blessed Abraham and his descendants would be blessed and anyone who cursed Abraham and his descendants would be cursed.

By the way, every scholar today believes that Abraham and his clan were not Sumerians.  But the most glorious tribe in the ancient Mesopotamia is Sumerians.  Abraham must have shared this glory.  Abraham must be of Sumerian origin, though he and his tribe adopted Semitic as their descendants later adopted Aramic, Greek, Latin, Germany, English, etc.

We had better think that Abraham was from Sumerians to be parallel with King Khufu and ancient Egyptians who built the Great Pyramids in Giza.

Tokyo was half destroyed twice in the past.

In September 1923, the Great Kantō earthquake destroyed 381,000 houses and killed about 100,000 residents in and around Tokyo, while forcing 1.9 million people to suffer any damage or evacuate.

In March 1945, the US Air Forces sent 470 B29 bombers to Tokyo.  They destroyed 270,000 houses and buildings and killed 80,000 citizens and wounded 41,000 residents.  The total number of afflicted people were 1.1 million.

However, in the samurai era when Tokyo was called Edo, a big earthquake occurred around Tokyo killing more than 10,000 people in 1855, and a big fire was set off in 1657 killing more than 100,000 Edo residents and in 1772 killing more than 15,000.

But in the civil war that put an end to the last samurai regime in Edo in 1868, the whole city of Edo was at risk for becoming a fierce battle field.  At the time, the Tokugawa shogun, Tokugawa Yoshinobu, already lost his will to fight, though the capital Edo of the Tokugawa samurai government was still defended by thousands of samurai troops subject to the shogun.　　

Besides about 1.5 million residents lived in Edo.  If more than 10,000 anti-Tokugawa samurai troops, equipped with advanced rifles and cannons imported from the UK and France and led by a powerful samurai leader Saigo Takamori (1828-1877), had been determined to take over power from the Tokugawa clan by force, Tokugawa samurais deployed around the Edo Castle should have set a fire to Edo streets and fought to their last breath, sacrificing so many citizens.

However, both the sides entered the last minute negotiations to allow Tokugawa camps to surrender without battles and abandon the Edo Castle to the revolutionary troops tied up with the imperial authority.  Leaders of the imperial samurais promised not to punish or execute Tokugawa Yoshinobu and his subordinate samurai warriors.  In this way, Edo could escape the war damage.

And this critical negotiation was conducted by Saigo Takamaori, a top military leader of the anti-Tokugawa camp, and Katsu Kaisyu, one of top samurai ministers of the feudal Tokugawa regime.

This is one of the most well-known event in the modern Japanese history.  Both Saigo and Katsu are regarded as great heroes in the Meiji Restoration.  However, Saigo was originally a lower-class of samurai of the Shimazu Clan in Satsuma (presently Kagoshima Prefecture, the most southwest region of Japan); Katsu was a self-made samurai bureaucrat in the Edo government.  If the era had been peaceful and normal, they must not have become such historical characters.  But Saigo Takamori acted as the representative of the Emperor and the coalition of anti-Tokugawa imperial samurais, and Katsu Kaisyu represented the Tokugawa shogun (the king of samurais) to save Edo, later called Tokyo, from tragedy of the civil war in 1868, though some fierce battles continued between samurais on the Tokugawa side and imperial samurais in the regions north of Tokyo for months.

As I mentioned Saigo Takamori yesterday, it would be appropriate to take a look at a brief description about Katsu Kaisyu in a common source of information.

Count Katsu Kaishū (1823 – 1899) was a Japanese statesman, naval engineer during the Late Tokugawa shogunate and early Meiji period.[1] 

Katsu was born in Edo (present day Tokyo) to a low-ranking retainer of the Tokugawa Shogun. 

As a youth Katsu Kaishu, whose given name was Katsu Rintaro (Kaishu was pseudonym), studied Dutch and European military science, and was eventually appointed translator by the government when European powers attempted to open contact with Japan. Katsu developed the reputation as an expert in western military technology. 

In 1860, Katsu served as captain of the warship Kanrin-maru, (with assistance from US naval officer Lt. John M. Brooke), to escort the first Japanese delegation to San Francisco, California en route to Washington, DC for the formal ratification of the Harris Treaty. The Kanrin Maru, built by the Dutch, was the first Japanese vessel to sail to the Western world. Kaishū remained in San Francisco for nearly two months, observing American society, culture and technology. 

In 1866, Katsu was appointed negotiator between the bakufu forces and the anti-shogunal domain of Chōshū, and later served as chief negotiator for the Tokugawa bakufu, ensuring a relatively peaceful and orderly transition of power in the Meiji Restoration.

It is a little ironical that Saigo Takamori died in the civil war in 1877, a war Saigo launched to help disenchanted ex-samurais neglected by the Meiji Government, while Katsu Kaisyu was respected by leaders of the new imperial government and asked to work for them as a member of the imperial Cabinet to live till 1899.

In this way Tokyo has never been a battle field in Japanese civil wars in history owing to the two heroes of Saigo and Katsu, which is a very important historical fact for Japanese of even today.

The most popular and respected in the era of the Meiji Restoration of Japan was Takamori Saigo.

Saigō Takamori (1828 – 1877) was one of the most influential samurai in Japanese history, living during the late Edo Period and early Meiji Era. He has been dubbed the last true samurai.[1] He was born Saigō Kokichi, and received the given name Takamori in adulthood. He wrote poetry under the name Saigō Nanshū.

The samurai era of Japan was put an end to through a civil war between the Tokugawa shogun regime and anti-Tokugawa samurai camps that tied up with noblemen and the emperor.  The anti-Tokugawa coalition mainly consisted of four feudal domains: Satsuma (presently Kagoshima Prefecture), Chosyu (presently Yamaguchi Prefecture), Tosa (presently Kochi Prefecture), and Hizen (Prefecture Saga Prefecture).  Among the four, Satsuma had the strongest samurai forces and the most stable economic base with the most forward-looking feudal ruler Shimazu.

Saigo was a samurai who served the feudal lord of Satsuma, namely the house of Shimazu.  Specifically Lord Shimazu Nariakira (1809-1858) promoted young Saigo from a mere low-level samurai to one of his entourage.  Since US Commodore Perry arrived at Tokyo Bay in 1853, leading his well-armed fleet, to make Japan abandon its closed-door policy, the Tokugawa shogun (namely the king of samurais) and his ministers could not govern Japan as they had done for the past 250 years.  The Tokugawa regime was not well prepared for the new era where Japan had to open the nation, establish diplomatic ties with the US, the UK, France and other countries, and cope with foreign pressure.  So, this samurai government took the plunge and did what they had never done since its establishment of power in early 1600s; they  asked advice from feudal lords who governed their own local domains while being subject to the Tokugawa clan as vassals.   And Shimazu Nariakira of Satsuma situated in the most southwest region of Japan was the one who tried to take advantage of this opportunity so as to expand his influence in the central samurai government in Edo (Tokyo).  In doing so, Shimazu Nariakira picked up Saigo as his close adviser and one of leading staff.       　  

When Shimazu Nariakira died, his nephew took over the position of the Lord of Satsuma, but the real power was in the hand of a younger brother of  Shimazu Nariakira or the father of the new lord.  So, Saigo was demoted by the new rulers of Satsuma twice, as they did not trust Saigo from a lower-class of the samurai world of Satsuma.   However situations of Japan became so tense.  With the Tokugawa shogun losing power, other feudal lords and anti-Tokufgawa samurai came to compete with one another to hold the balance of power.  The Satsuma Clan needed a strong leader with real ability to lead samurai forces and handle political games.  In this dynamic movement that was shaking dignity of the Tokugawa shogun, Saigo was again asked by the Shimazu family to lead the Clan.  

As time went by, other anti-Tokugawa feudal lords and samurai leaders came to admit Saigo's extraordinary caliber.  Saigo was not a good swordsman, excellent bureaucrat, eloquent speaker, smart economist, or prudent scholar, but he is a great strategist, tough negotiator, sharp and courageous operator of samurais, and above all a man of faith and humanity.  Saigo was not hated by other samurais.  Townsmen and farmerss loved his generous-hearted way of living.  Saigo didn't try to be rich and honored.  But he was determined to put an end to the Tokugawa era.

The civil war that put an end to the Tokugawa samurai regime and paved the way for the Meiji Restoration was won by the anti-Tokugawa samurai coalition  that succeeded to take the emperor and noblemen on their side.  And everybody admitted that Saigo Takamori achieved the most decisive feat as the de-facto supreme commander of anti-Tokugawa coalition forces.

In the new Meiji Government established in 1868, Saigo took one of top positions.  He became the first full general of the imperial military.  However, there were many ex-samurais in Satsuma and other local regions who could not secure any positions in the new Government.  Those unsatisfactory ex-samurais appealed to Saigo who eventually left the central Government in Tokyo to go back to Kagoshima and accept a petition from those ex-samurais for leading them in a new civil war.

In 1877, Saigo Takamori, as the leader of Kagoshima rebel troops, died in the civil war called the Satsuma Rebellion.  It is the last civil war in Japan.  Saigo Takamori leading 40,000 anti-Tokyo ex-samurais stood against 300,000 imperial government troops led by generals and politicians who were once Saigo's friends, colleagues, and subordinates.  

Despite this tragic incident or due to this tragic civil war, the general public of Japan respected Saigo Takamori who threw out his success in the new imperial Government but had sympathy with ex-samurais who were neglected by the central Government busy in promoting modernization and Westernization of Japan.

So, Saigo Takamori is believed to have a very Japanese mind as he has been respected and loved by the Japanese populace.  His presence in the Japanese modern history is unparalleled.

The most well know phrase Saigo Takamori spoke or wrote for any commemoration is "Respect the heaven and love people!"  This expression sounds somewhat like Christian.  And, indeed, there is a report that Saigo read the Bible, translated into Japanese or Chinese, with enthusiasm.  Even there is a legend that Saigo taught the Bible to some citizens in his hometown of Kagoshima.

More interestingly Mao Tse-tung (1893-1976), the founder of the People's Republic of China and once the long-time head of the Chinese Communist Party, is said to be an earnest admirer of Saigo Takamori, though it is unknown if Mao Tse-tung had ever taught the Bible to any Chinese.   .

Saigo Takamori, who was also a kind of the head of the intelligence agency of the Shimazu Clan, avoided being taken into a picture.  However, it is widely believed that Saigo looked like this engineered picture.

A Pacific Ocean Coat around Tokyo




Yesterday I checked cars running on a bypass road beside a hamburger shop with a focus on license numbers of those cars.

I thought I might be able to spot a car with an identical number in each of four digits of a license number, since I recently mentioned a higher probability of my finding such cars there.  Then a few moments later, while I was watching, there came a car with the the license plate number "11-11."  So I soon entered the shop to take some.

Today when I was walking on a beach, I found a small dead shark on gravel.  It seemed to be washed in from the Pacific ocean.   Then I continued walking to find very small translucent fish.  They were all just as large as a half of my finger.  Ten or twenty of them were jumping on wet sands at a water's edge.  Waves carried them and left them on the beach full of sands and gravel.

It was cloudy and no people were swimming, but there were some anglers and families playing with waves.  

This is what happened recently around Tokyo, though you may not call them miracles.

Anyway this shore was above the epicenter of the the Great Kantō earthquake that struck the Kantō Plain on the Japanese main island of Honshū with energy of  a magnitude of 7.9 on September 1, 1923.  This big earthquake took on about 100,000 citizens mainly living in downtown Tokyo.

The numbers in the map indicate intensity of the tremor in the Japanese scale system.
