"Greater Works than These"

(Yesterday, not scenes from a Japanese movie...)

"Greater Works than These"

(Hollywood of the American Empire)

Bread and circuses ultimately occupied the central part of daily life of ancient Romans.

Or ancient Roman citizens had no difficulty in accessing bread and a circus, since for this purpose they joined the Empire's conquest of surrounding agriculturally and culturally rich regions.

In this context, we have to focus on the Hollywood thing in the American Empire of today.

If you live in California and feel unbearable arrogance of those New York guys and the Washington-D.C. elite, you might still think that future glory of the U.S. is in the hand of those involved in Hollywood business, since Wall Street lost its glory in September 2008.

California dream-makers in the driver's seat

Sometimes it's not that easy living in Los Angeles. Despite splendid weather, sprawling beaches and gorgeous mountain ranges - not to mention the well-tanned Hollywood stars - you face the unrelenting, withering scorn of smug colleagues long established in New York and Washington.
...
Hollywood thus produces the kind of contemporary currency that at least equals anything produced by Wall Street back East: "The biggest project of image in human history, of course, has been Hollywood," they argue. The assertion is beyond argument.
...
Gardels/Medavoy, elevating Los Angeles to something of a Roman/Vatican analogue in the secular-values department, you can easily see why West Coast is absolutely the avant-garde leading edge of our 21st Century America.

No disrespect to our East Coast colleagues is intended, of course.

If Wall Street loses face so badly, the American Empire has still the dollar and Hollywood.

Joh 5:19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

Joh 5:20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.

Joh 5:21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.
