"rebuked the winds and the sea" - Shakespeare's Use of the Word God

Mt. Fuji and Tokyo Bay

Shakespeare's Use of the Word God

Somebody wrote that there are 92 quotes on God by Shakespeare.

Some of interesting expressions are:
God has given you one face, and you make yourself another.(William Shakespeare)

Well, God give them wisdom that have it; and those that are fools, let them use their talents.(William Shakespeare, "Twelfth Night")

O, God forgive my sins and pardon thee!(William Shakespeare, "Twelfth Night")

I say no more than truth, so help me God!(William Shakespeare, "Twelfth Night")

Ignorance is the curse of God; knowledge is the wing wherewith we fly to heaven.(William Shakespeare)

Shakespeare had a strong foundation in his religious learning.  He knew that God has authority.  But Shakespeare also though that God is not fast in helping people.  Accordingly, God is mysterious to him.  So, Shakespeare wanted to deliver a joke about Heaven, since God would not come fast, being angry, if He was offended.

Shakespeare was a professional in entertainment business.  He must have minded what words about God would rejoice the audience.  And Shakespeare handled the word God as if he had been a Protestant without guidance from the Vatican.  Yet, he was an actor, too.

Catholic Shakespeare must have prayed to God for his success in London full of Protestants, including dangerous ones with worldly power.

And what line do you want to have Shakespeare write about God?

"O God, my God, Psalms rejoices you, I know, for I feel like I have written!"  (EEE-Reporter in lieu of William)
